HD D3 player appears to be toast

It seems to be stuck on the welcome screen and it isnt doing anything. I had an HD DVD in the drive but after a few attempts to power it back up, eventually I got the machine responding and ejected the disc. But it's back stuck at "welcome" again. Any recommendations? It would appear that my player is in the process of biting the dust, as I expected/feared, and I'll be selling my collection soon :D... maybe not all of them but most of them.

Do you have the 4.0 FW installed on it? If it's busted you can sell it AS-IS on eBay. I sold a busted A20 for $50 plus shipping several months ago and got a replacement A20 for about the same price so I broke even. If you do indeed need a new HD DVD player I would strongly suggest the A2 as it has a better SD DVD upscaler than the A3/D3 does. You can can get an A3 for about $50 as well on eBay.

Is this problem common with the A3/D3 series? I noticed that when I go into the set up and try to set my ethernet, everything freezes and I'm back to square 1 until I unplug the thing. I've decided not to buy another player. If this player is toast, I'm done with HD DVD and will liquidate my collection.

Did you try to update the firmware with a disc in the drive? That will usually cause this problem because after the update and auto reboot, more must be done by the player on reboot, but with a disc in the drive the player tries to load that instead of completing the firmware update which can be the cause of this situation with the player stuck at the welcome screen. This has been known since they first came out back in 2006 and I reported this to Toshiba when I saw a consistent pattern of failed updates over the Ethernet update when a disc was left in the drive. Toshiba eventually added the notation in the update instructions to remove any disc BEFORE updating. I think they should have designed these players to NOT do the update if a disc is in the drive, but AFAIK they never added this safety feature or couldn't.

It could also be the memory simm that went bad as another possibility, but this is less likely.

No. Initially, the unit refused to respond. After I got the unit to "work", I attempted to try to find a firmware update via the network and the settings hadn't been changed so it didn't find the server. When I tried to update the settings for ethernet, the unit froze on me and refused to respond. I will check later today or tomorrow to see if the unit is otherwise functional (ie- supports playback)... it might be.

Call Toshiba and have them mail you a 4.0 FW disc and try that. It is free by the way.

If I'm already at 4.0 firmware will it matter? I'm hoping reflashing the firmware is possible and would help.

Also, I don't suppose you've got a #?

Good news is player is functional and working for now. So I won't be ditching it any time soon unless it craps out on my totally. But I think the ethernet functionality is toast since I can't get past the setup to turn on DHCP and whatnot. No big deal really.
