Ryan Smyth for Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing, and a 5th round draft pick.
I really like Quincey, but Ryan Smyth is an animal! I can close my eyes & picture his ass parked in front of the net~
Good veteran for our young guys to be around too... This was a win/win trade IMO~ :2cents
What do you think?!?

I was in BC a few days ago. It's big news up there. Here, not so much...

I'm not too familiar with the play of Ryan Smyth, but from what I'm reading it is something to get excited about!!
This past season, Smyth’s 14th in the NHL, he tied for his team’s lead in points (59), was first in assists (33) and was second in goals (26) in 77 games. He also tied for the club lead in power play goals (10), short-handed goals (one), tied for first in game-winning goals (three) and he was first in shots (257).

As an avalanche fan I have to say, LA got robbed. Maybe a slight overstatement, but hear me out. Smyth was great at one point, but he's getting slower and he's too banged up. He might turn it around, but I doubt it. I was really excited to see him sign with the avs thinking he would finally give them grit at the net, but he didn't. Maybe it was coaching, I don't know. I was just not impressed at all by his play the past 2 years. What he does bring is a great veteran presence on the ice, that's a good point. BUT, when you balance that all with his wildly bloated $6.25 million cap hit for the next 3 years, he is suddenly not very attractive. In a year, you might find your selves wondering why LA is paying that much for this guy. That's all I'm saying.

Figures!!
Where have all the U.S. hockey fans gone?!?!?!? :what:
Hockey is pretty much always big news in Canada, but with Smyth being an Oiler for so long before being traded, and BC being fairly close to Edmonton, I'm sure they are following it closely~
God I hope this year turns out to be a GREAT one for the Kings!!!

I hear ya... I understand where you are coming from, and hey, I really like(d) Quincy too, but I do think that this will be a good thing for the Kings at this point in time. With all the youngsters we have, Smyth will be a good solid veteran to add to the mix. Plus, even though you say you have been disapointed in his play for the past two years, I can't seem to get the image of his big ass parked in front of our golie out of my mind!! :eyecrazy
I am hoping for that "grit" from him working in OUR favor next year... but just like you, if that DOESN'T happen, then yes, I will be upset.
Could be that I'm "grasping @ straws" a bit here too, as the Kings have been in a down trend since 1993 practically, but I really do think that this next year we could surprize a whole bunch of people if everything comes together... :2cents

That's the part that dissappointed me the most. He doesn't even do that anymore. I was expecting him to park there and make ife suck for goalies, but he didn't. That's why I say maybe it was coaching, but then why would you intentionally tell a guy not to do the thing he is the best at?
I bet your right about the veteran presence though. Smyth is great leader. Definitely captain material. Could really give those young guys some direction.
Me? I'm just hoping the Avs are at least interesting to watch this year. If Duchene makes the line-up (Which I don't see) it might be fun. But, we'll see. Gotta love the re-build.:banghead:

Nice write up. I totally agree too, it does look good for both teams. From the Avs perspective it's the pain that needs to happen to clear out the bad contracts that were signed over the years. They have been open about wanting to drop the total team salary to the $47 mill level. That's a good goal for next year and should help prep them for some growth in the future.

Wonder what's going to happen with that NHLPA investigation into the Blackhawks?!?!?!?

Wouldn't mind picking up Kris Versteeg!!
Actually, I think the Kings just need another fairly big name guy & we'd be set. I just don't want them to have to trade away their future to get him, ya know?

Nope~ :what:
I bought a mini-pack of eight games I think last year, for my sons...
Other than that, I just go see them sporadically. My oldest son is a SJ Sharks fan, so we try to catch those games at least.

I tend to think the technicalities in the contracts will be swept away pretty easily.
Apparently Sakic is finally retiring. While I really like him, it's probably time. He's just not the player he was. It's going to leave a HUGE GAPING HOLE at captain for the Avs, but as far as on ice, it's not really going to change much. More than anything, it's a leadership and example that will be lost. But at 40, he really is probably making the right decision.

I agree... Joe is one of the quality guys in the NHL, but yes, I guess it really IS time~ & that WILL be a big pair of skates to fill too!!
