pappylap 06-30-2009, 09:34 AM Hi fellow members, I was recently reading a discussion between Rbinck and PFC5 about adding a sticky in this forum to address the pros and cons of our two most popular flat panel choices and since virtually every "ubernoob"(see definition) who comes to this site for advice gets his thread bombarded with the "Buy plasma" from the plasma crowd and "Buy LCD" from the LCD crowd it makes perfect sense to create a sticky where (hopefully) the "ubernoob" would go to at least get a general idea of the differences in the technologies and the pros and cons of each without having each thread become a shouting match between fans of each technology...
There could also be a section to dispel any myths about each tehcnology......thoughts?
definition (Ubernoob)... noun...someone completly unfamiliar with HDTV terms and technologies...(A deer in the headlights)
daleb 06-30-2009, 01:39 PM Yup, I tend to agree we need to separate the technologies for newbies.
Give them the pluses and minuses in 'stickes' and let it fly. It's not like we are getting a cut for which one they buy.
At least they can get a free education, plus they still have the freedom to educate themselves even more and avoid some of the misinformed folks out there who will try and steer them in a direction contrary to the facts.
Silly to argue about which is better.
mobiushky 06-30-2009, 01:57 PM Actually this is in the works. PFC5 is putting it together with some help. Wanna get in on it? Send him a PM.
pappylap 06-30-2009, 02:09 PM Nah, you guys know more than I do........
P.S. make sure there is a good explaination about off axis viewing most people know of it, but not why it occurs....thanx

I agree, PFC5 has his facts nailed down good. And if not, he knows where to find them.
For the 'detail' ie; viewing angle, there are other objective sources for those who want the technical explanation that can be linked to..
pappylap 07-06-2009, 10:25 AM Sooooooo....where is the sticky?
It was a holiday weekend and I also have a lot of work hitting me at the same time, so it will be a little while longer. :hithere:
pappylap 07-06-2009, 06:08 PM I also have a lot of work hitting me at the same time
Is the work wearing 8oz or 10oz gloves?.........:D
teej813 07-10-2009, 11:46 AM An objective list of pros/cons would be VERY helpful as a brief stroll through this forum has already revealed strong feelings held by both the LCD and Plasma crowds.
Thanks! And great forum, by the way.

So where is the sticky?
rbinck 09-02-2009, 01:02 PM I PMed PFC5 about it and referenced an opinion piece I had put on my blog to serve as a start, but haven't heard anything back. I was thinking it would be a collaboration with PFC5 giving the plasma side an I give the LCD side. Without a collaboration only one side really is shown. Plasma guys tend to have different requirements than LCD guys as far as what is important, so getting both views would be important.
pappylap 10-16-2009, 08:25 AM Whadda' ya think?
shreder75 10-16-2009, 08:43 AM yeah, this would be great!!!
I still don't think I understand the whole 24p and 3:2 pulldown thing....lol
Loves2Watch 10-16-2009, 09:24 AM I still don't think I understand the whole 24p and 3:2 pulldown thing....lol
Neither one of those has anything to do with LCD vs. plasma. See here for info on that - http://www.moviola.com/pulldown asnd here - http://www.zerocut.com/tech/pulldown.html
Hope this helps. :)
DIRECTVMAN 10-16-2009, 10:11 AM I've also noticed an Ubernoob gets bombarded with - Buy a PANASONIC plasma !!!
It's as if some of you think anything other than a PANASONIC plasma is a steaming pile of plasma crap.

In most cases, that's true. Let's face facts, Pioneer is number one in plasma displays but sadly they are making no more. Panasonic is now in the number 1 spot for many reasons, the most important one is reliability. No other company can compare in this area and although Samsung is trying hard and making some very nice PDP displays, they still have problems with reliability, image retention and longevity. LG is not even on the same playing field.
Panasonic currently rules the plasma display market, they continue to develop the technology and innovate.

Very well put and based soley on the facts in front of us, if not a pioneer there really is no other option except a panny, the other plasma displays just can't keep up at this time . I assume that Sammy will eventually make a stronghold but the reliability issue with them would sway most away.

OK. So tell me what would YOU suggest they buy for a plasma then?
It seems whenever someone bought something different than what most people concluded they should buy and then they complain that people suggest to others to buy the most popular brand for plasma. :p
There is a reason Panasonic sells more plasmas than anyone else I would think. Nothing stops someone who bought another brand from chiming in with their suggestion as well though. ;)
It is just that most people are happy with their Panasonic purchase and that is what they suggest. Should we suggest they buy something other than what they already decided was the best choice? Should they not make suggestions at all and leave the poster without any answers?

Panasonic is the best plasma manufacturer second only to Pioneer, these are facts! I don't recall anyone saying anything but Panasonic plasmas are a steaming pile, you made that up yourself. Why not recommend the best when giving a recommendation? It seems only logical.
