My 722 DVR works fine. Browsing through the menus though, I noticed that my HDD High temp is 132, low is 120, ave 125. This seems a little high to me, although, as I said, the unit works fine.
I don't want to get into trying to add an internal fan to this unit as I don't know what I'm doing. Would an external fan help at all? If so, is there a good external fan that I can get?
Thanks,
Terry

Search this thread for that issue... It's been covered pretty thoroughly here in the past.
I use a cheap external USB fan as I do not have an external drive hooked up.

Is it in an enclosed unit or is it ina fairly open space? One of those cheapo USB fans may do the trick. The USB ports on the 722 are active and will power up such fan..

Yeah, it's in an enclosed unit with a ventilation slot at the back. So if I got a USB fan and sat it next to the DVR, it would be of some benefit? What about sitting the DVR on a Laptop cooler?

You can try a laptop cooler, but the intake fans on many laptops are on the bottom, so that may not work well. I don't think the intake fan on the 722 is on the bottom (I have the 622). If it is an enclosed space, it is basically recycling the already discharged warm air from the unit causing the temp to increase and be higher than normal. I would use the USB fan as an exhaust to the rear hole to try an expel the hot air being exhausted from the 722.. Or try and put the 722 in a more open space if possible. I believe if the 722 reaches a certain temp, it will automatically shut down or reboot to avoid damage (like a PC.CPU). So at least you have not seen that point yet.

Will do. Thanks. Is the USB port active, or do I have to get DISH to activate it?

I hope so. A DISH e-agent just told me that the 722 wouldn't power a small external USB fan. I find that difficult to believe though.

Your dish agent just lied to you. Or at best is misinformed. I have a 622, but I use the usb ports to charge my PS3 controllers sometimes. I use one to power the IR2BT device I got also. So I think a small usb fan would be no issue.
But a better question is, why bother? IF the unit it operating fine, leave it be. If it dies, have Dish replace it. Eventually they will figure out that the heat is killing their boxes.

Nah, I think that agent you talked to is full of shit. The USB ports on you 722 will be active for power. Mine is on my 622 and power is active. They need to be activated for service if you connect a hard drive to them as an extra fee is required. Just plug in a pen drive to test and see if the activity light fires up. It should. And it should have no problems powering a USB fan as many here and other forums make mention of doing this.. I think the max temp before the 722 will shut down is like 145 degrees or something.. So as long as you don't come near that, you should be OK, even without a fan. But I still think a fan, a bigger hole or better placement would be a good idea.

Thanks for your help. much appreciated. I'll try the fan for the hell of it, but as you and others have said, it's running fine at an average temp of 125.....that temp just felt a little too warm for me. If my cheap ass fan takes even 5 degrees off that, I'll be happy.

I use this little baby. USB powered and variable speed so you can control how 'fanny' it sounds. :)
Just put it in the middle of the grill, on the left of your DVR. It is the perfect height.

PS I have mine on the left side also, and I have it set up to PULL air THROUGH the unit and out the left side~
The only way it should be used...

Not to be a stick in the mud, but I'm failing to see the point. If the unit is operating fine, why bother? I can only assume that you bought the unit outright and are trying to protect your investment? If not, then under the terms of the lease, if it burns out, they will replace it. I have 2 622's running as is from day one for a little over 2 years now. Sure they are hot, but never had a problem with them. So I personally don't see the point to adding cooling to a system that isn't broken. But that's me i guess.

I do not either.. But I had an old oak entertainment center for a short time before I upgraded. It as all enclosed except for a cable slot for each compartment. A few of my components would run pretty hot so I grabbed a small fan like that as a tempo fix before I saved enough for a nice "open entertaiment center. It worked great for a tempo couple month fix. My 622 would run hot and reboot (whenit hit the 145 degree threshold) once in a while. The fan prevented that BS and saved the programs on my hard drive I did not want to loose. If you have and enclosed EC and need a cheap and easy fix, that would be it..

Another good way but not the "only" way.. He could (like I did), run it as an exaust out the back of the cable hole to vent out the hot air being exausted from the 622 and allow cooler air to be pulled from the front. This would only work better under certain circumstances like my old oak EC that was completly enclose other than the cable slots in the back and the glass door in the front. But another option.. Cooled my slots by a good 25-30 degrees..
Kinda like the warm and cool zones in a computer room enviroment.

Regardless of whether you own or lease th eequipment, you should want it to work reliably so as to not loose programming by a hardware failure. I invested in a $50 low speed home theter fan and it has kept my equipment operating for 3+ years with minimal loss of service due to reboots and only one failure of an internal HDD.
Let your equipment run hot and you are asking for trouble.

That's exactly the point. Why risk letting the DVR get to the point of rebooting due to overheating when a $12 fan solves the problem?
I installed the fan last night, and this morning I can feel how much cooler it is inside the EC. I'll be interested to see the new HIGH, AVERAGE and LOW figures. :)

Does that mean it is always on? Sounds like it might not last very long, running 7/24.

Yes the fan always has power going to it. You can turn it down with the knob but not all the way off.
Mine is still running great.
You can tell by this picture that nearly all the heat is produced on the left side, were the power supply comes in.
The left side has a grill that goes the entire length of the case.
The cooling fan for the DVR seems to run continuously anyway...there might be a on/off feature but it seems to always be on.
The small grill on the right is used only for the fan air supply...it should not be block.

Mine is too, and yes, it's running 24/7...
If you think about it, it really IS a "PC case fan", and I have always left my PC's running 24/7. Never had a case fan burn out or otherwise fail for any reason in the past... :yippee:

I tend to agree. I had a couple of troublesome 622s in the past and added a small fan to exhaust heat from the left side. I never knew how much it really helped.
Now with a 722k and 612 I don't bother. If they go belly up, so be it, I'll have to get them changed out. I always leave generous space around all my components , which is common sense.
