Recently subscribed to Dish. At the time that I decided to sign up, I told them that I have a Philips 160GB DVDR (hard drive recorder) that I would like to use with the system. They ensured me that it would be no problem, even after I asked them to check several times. The intallation tech came and installed the box and dish and left. Of course after he left, I hooked up the DVR and to my surprise, it would not recognize the stations. I called Dish and spoke to the service center. They said whoever told me my system would work was wrong. After standing ground for literally an hour, Dish caved and sent a tech out to provide me free of charge a VIP722 DVR. I still have my Philips and would like to utilize it in some fashion, anyone have any ideas? Its a really great machine.

i know i'm not much help; but at the worst you can ebay it, & recover some decent $ that way (i've watched my wife buy & sell pretty good deals on ebay, over the years).

you might also try contacting the manufacturer, & see if you can resolve the problem (it may be a simple fix). if so, you could use the equipment in a secondary room.

You can still use your Philips DVR to record OTA broadcasts, record SD programming off the satellite box and play DVDs, but there is nothing except the R5000, the Hauppauge 1212 and the Black Magic Design Intensity that can capture HD signal from a satellite receiver and record it to a HDD.

As for SD recording just use the composite or S-video output from the Dish box to the composite or s-video input on the DVD recorder.

Many people use SD DVD recorders to archive material off their Dish Boxes.
