Dumb question-but I gotta ask!educounselor 05-18-2009, 05:45 PM Does Dish have On Demand? I keep hearing about it, but can't find it on my receiver.... garys 05-18-2009, 05:58 PM Yes, there is not much to it. It can only be found on newer dvr receivers. Which receiver do you have? educounselor 05-20-2009, 05:13 AM I don't have a DVR receiver garys 05-20-2009, 06:57 AM You probably won't see it till you get one. jim5506 05-20-2009, 10:36 AM Only DVR receivers can do VOD. There is talk of adding VOD to the 411/211 with the EHD , but then they are DVRs also. There is no way to deliver streaming HD contend VOD to any satellite receiver. It takes one transponder for each stream and there are millions of subscribers and a limited amount of bandwidth. Satellite VOD is pre-downloaded and viewed off the hard drive. Digital cable has much more bandwidth to play with so they can deliver a discrete signal to a selected box. They also are dealing with much smaller audience numbers even in large cities, while satellite delivers its signal nationwide. Assuming our local cable system has 25% market penetration, that is 50,000 connections to deal with. Dish Network has 13,000,000 connections to service with less available bandwidth. VOD without pre-download is virtually impossible at this time for satellite providers. If VOIP improves in the future, perhaps internet streaming can augment the limited satellite download capacity, but then it just might replace it. | |
