HD DVD Rom Drive, Do You Have One?

I'm looking to buy a usb external HD DVD-Rom. I don't want BR included in it, I already have a BR player.

I have done some research, but there's not alot out there from what I can see. Does anyone have one of these drives? The price of HD DVD's is much cheaper than BR. You all have made it sound really good too. I want to purchase, "The Thing" on HD DVD. Should I look into refurbished? I don't want a stand alone player, just the drive.

Thanks

I think some have used the xBox360 HD DVD addon drive with their computers, and some have bought them for as little as $50.00 new.

Hopefully one of the members who bought one and got it working can post here as i may get one also.

I am using the pc as a htpc connected to my main display. I have the XBOX HD DVD add-on (or strap-on :p ) connected to my pc via USB. No modifications were needed, it was immediately recognized by my OS (XP SP3).

It acts only as an external drive, it is not a "HD DVD player". Just like you need a DVD software player for an external DVD drive, you'll need HD DVD playback software. I don't know which software player companies support HD DVD out of the box today, Arcsoft may. Cyberlink (PowerDVD) stopped officially supporting HD DVD with PowerDVD8 Ultra in 2008, though that version could still be "hacked" to play HD DVD's. Don't know about the currently offered PowerDVD 9 Ultra.

Considering you might need to buy the add-on and the software and HDM playback on a pc can be a p.i.t.a. (HDCP working? Flawless playback? PQ on par with hardware players? etc.) , i'd recommend thinking about getting a hardware player.

As PFCand Nik said.. The 360 addon is a great external HD DVD drive with a little device driver action to install and a compatable media player software (like PowerDVD).. Works well with XP, but not sure about Vista. Not sure where you live or if you have a Fry's near by. The 1 near me still had a few 360 Addons on the shelf for $39 with KK..

And just to brag a little :D :D I bought mine here in Germany while Amazon was getting rid of its stock. I got one new for 10 Euros, and afterwards sold the remote control for 5 Euros...

Hi guyz, ty for responding.

Can I use this? It says laptop, but I don't see why I couldn't use it for my desktop.

What are your thoughts?

Yeh, it is a USB external device so you can hook it to any computer, like an external hard drive..

I really want it, but I'm skeptical about ordering it. I have never ordered something from another country before. The seller has a great rating, but still.
