Probably a really stupid question!

But hey, I'm new to HDTV and asking is the only way I'll learn :)

Could I download a HD clip, say from here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/HDVideo.aspx), burn it to a DVD+RW and play it on my HDTV? Or would that just not work at all?

Your dvd player is the limiting factor.

So it's actually possible? What should my player be capable of, HD-DVD or something else?

It will be possible to burn a DVD of a downloaded clip, but the resulting DVD will not be a HD DVD. To my knowledge there is not any HD DVD players yet available. A current DVD player will still be SD resolution, although the new DVD players will upconvert the SD to HD resolutions. You are about a year or two early.

So technically I can't do it just yet, or could I still if my DVD player has component-out and progressive scan enabled?

Your dvd player will output 480p at best. Which is considered standard definition. If you have component out,,you should be using that in the first place. If you have hd clips downloaded to your computer you can play them on your tv if you have the proper video card. I have an old ATI 9600xt with dvi out. I ran a cable to my Sony and it plays hd content just fine.

I would not say that too fast, there are a couple of dvd players capable of playing WMV-HD. the LINK PLAYER from www.iodata.com and the linktheater from buffalo. They both play HD content through either network or dvd.

One thing I have learned is there is always a technicality that will pop up as soon as you say anything. That player in order to play a movie will require a computer for the source file as I understand it. It will play HD material to the extent that will fit on DVDs. It is not however what is going to be considered a HD DVD player... the Toshiba backed HD DVD that is.

That is an interesting box.

up-converting DVD players (ones that up-convert up to 1080i) have existed for quite some time now... no need to wait 1-2 years for that.. they're just really REALLY expensive which is why no one really knows much about them..

better off to build a HTPC though, as the benifits of having a decent HTPC a three-fold! the ability to up-convert your DVD's using software codecs, being able to play ANY single file format you can find, and playing your PC games on a very lrage screen :D

An example of what can be done with a HTPC:
