I am new to DISH and unknowingly got their newest HDTV DVR-942 receiver. All was working for this first month until a few nights ago when an error occurred. I was trying to find a show by using the "THEMES" option on the remote.
THEMES > Movies > Screen with Error
It does the same for all the choices under Themes.
I tried my best to recreate the error from a screen grab I got online.
http://www.kirkatwork.com/dish/
There is no info in the info section, no other option is selectable and I have the word "Error" in the top left hand corner of the program listings (indicated by my red circle).
In calling DISH's support, the very friendly Holly eventually explained that this receiver was really REALLY REALLY REALLY... new and that they never had experienced this before. I am suppose to call back in 72 hours while they contact the manufacturers.
Anyone else experiencing this? Any fixes? ideas?
Oh, it goes without saying that I did try the whole reset procedure DISH always recommends...
Thanks for responses!

I am not getting that problem...but ever since about 2-3 days ago, I have gotten a frozen screen twice and then it goes into the Hard Drive Diagnostics and checks everything and then resets and is ok.
This just started a couple days ago...seems to happen when I access something I PVRed...
Anyone Else see this?

Try doing a reset by holding the power button down for 5 - 10 seconds. I had to do this with mine a couple of times when I first got it. Since then it has been pretty solid.

Other than this little set back (is it little though?), I can honestly say, I LOVE IT!
We are currently watching INTO THE WEST on TNTHD and, it is beautiful!
I'm new to DISH and yeah, I don't OWN the 942 (we paid the $250 'upgrade fee'), but, I get to keep it as long as I'm a customer. We just bought a townhome and we don't plan on moving anytime soon. Even if we did, we'd still get to hold onto it if we were to move to a new place!
HDTV with DVR... real nice!
Thanks to all for viewing & responding!

Sounds great! I figure leasing is the best way to go, especially if MPEG-4 and any other changes downline are desired, it's easy to do a switch.
We use our 510 in the BR to catch various non-HD shows. It is a great way to go. .. I am soooo close!

It turns out that I am NOT the only person experiencing this error! The last person I spoke to ... I forgot her name now... explained to me that it is an error that they are aware of and will hopefully be fixed in an upcoming update.
I asked if there was a 'work around' or 'temp fix' and... there is! She happened to be in the same building where the 'dedicated team' for developing the DVR 942 is done. She put me on hold and came back somewhat short of breath and instructed me to get a pen and paper.
MENU > 8 (Preferences) > 5 (Updates) > and then...
i. Set the update time 2 minutes ahead of now. (If it was 3:00pm, set it to 3:02 pm.)
ii. Hit Done / Cancel until you're back to the program that is currently on.
iii. After the 2 mins, it will prompt you to reset or shut down based on needing to update itself. Hit YES to allow it (even if TV 2 is doing a recording).
iv. It may shutdown for a bit, then turn on or it may stay on. I experienced both.
v. When you're back to watching Live TV, wait 1 minute... and do it all over again. Do this for a total of 3 times.
*BAM!* - I can use my THEMES and Searches.
Now, she also explained that it may only last anywhere between 1 and 6 days and, then I may have to redo the temp fix again after that. I am so excited again that I got this feature back.
Oh, incidentally, if you ask them about any type of 'credit or compensation', it seems like it's WAY too difficult to figure that out on their side. She basically said 'No. This is just a bug, like any newly released hardware may have, that will be taken care of in an update!'
Hope this helps anyone that experiences the same thing!

Yes...there are a few downsides of the 942...but that is with every DVR...I had problems from time to time with my 721. I also had problems with my TIVO/DTV unit..
Usually fixes come out to address the big issues.
But what I do know is that I think 942 is THE BEST receiver I have ever seen...hands down. And yes I have seen the DTV HD DVR and its not even in the park in my opinion.
The guide options are fabulous...the quality is outstanding...
Its the best currently available...

Is picture quality better, worst or same with the 942 or 811?
