bklynrickel 04-21-2009, 06:40 AM I was late in getting on board the HD DVD train. But, I'm happy that I'm on. The upscaling quality of the HD A2 is dramatic in my view - again, better than my Panny BD-35. Rich color, clarity, and sound presence. This is not any scientifically based statement - only my perception. DVDs approach HD/Blu ray quality. The HD A2 is my definite choice for a DVD player at this point, and helps ease the pain of high BD prices by simply opting for suitable DVD versions of movies instead at a lower price. I couldn't be happier.
By the way, I also have a Sony BDP-BX1, which is very disappointing, IMHO, when it comes to upscaling. So often it looks washed out when viewing a DVD. That's been a surprise too.
Nikopol 04-21-2009, 06:48 AM I have the european/PAL version of the HD-A2, the HD-E1. It's also my preferred DVD upscaler, though it does depend a little bit on the source material.
Having said that, i hardly watch DVDs any more and i don't have a dedicated DVD upscaler like an OPPO or the XDE-500. So in the end, my opinion doesn't say much about the upsclaing quality of the player.
HD Goofnut 04-21-2009, 08:31 AM Both the A2 and A20 are great upscalers as I have both to compare. The only HD DVD players that upscale any better are the A35 and XA2, but those aren't cheap and never really have been cheap.
bruceames 04-22-2009, 12:53 AM All HD DVD players do a great job upscaling. Toshiba didn't hold back in that department, and as a result HD DVD players are more highly regarded for upscaling than Blu-ray players are. Like Goofnut said, a few models upscale a little better (like the XA2, which I've used for the last 2+ years for DVD and HD DVD), but the difference isn't great. Glad it's working out for you. :)
Chris Gerhard 04-22-2009, 03:11 PM I have never owned the HD-A2 but I do own the HD-A20 and HD-XA2 and I know those second generation HD DVD players are very good standard DVD players. Both players also appear to be well made and should prove to be durable.

No the A2 does not output 1080p. It is limited to 1080i output, but that should not matter since you have a 1080p display so the display will just do the deinterlacing as all the data to do this is IN the 1080i stream from the player. Nearly all of the BD players of the same vintage did this EXCEPT that they added a secondary deinterlacing chip in the player (redundant to the chip in the display) instead of just letting the display do the deinterlacing. It was to get a marking bullet missing from the A2 spec sheet.
The HD DVD player models that did 1080p output were/are:
A20, A30, A35 & the XA2. There were also the Onkyo version of the XA2 that also output 1080p.

Didn't the XA1 output at 1080p? What about the LG BH100/200 and the Samsung UP5000?

No the XA1 was also only 1080i. You are right about the dual format players also doing it though. Thanks for catching that. ;)

No problem at all.

You can add the Integra DHS-8.8, another HD-XA2 clone.
Chris
Thanks Chris. I always forget about that one.
Lee Stewart 04-28-2009, 09:41 PM  . . . .
Amazed at the upscaling quality on the HD A2
I was thinking about this today as I was watching my DVD version of the Firefly TV series.
sprkeng 04-28-2009, 10:03 PM I have the the A-2 and A-3 and they both up scale better IMO than the panny BD-35 I also own, however the BD-35 rocks with Blue movies...
bruceames 04-28-2009, 10:05 PM Thanks Chris. I always forget about that one.
That one usually gets forgotten about since only a few hundred were allegedly made, and as such not many are aware that it exists, much less own one. However it's virtually identical to the Onkyo except for the nameplate and a few other even more trivial differences. That's what you get for $200 MSRP more.
Yeah. I know the Integra line is the high end line for Onkyo so it is the same company. Sometimes i am amazed how much more companies and some people think the name should add to the cost of a device.
