No more TrueHD w/ HD-A35?

According to many HD-A35 owners ever since the 4.0 firmware update the A35's don't do TrueHD or DD+ properly regardless of settings. So I put my player to the test and tested I Am Legend, it sounded awesome B4 and after the update.

But now several weeks later it just does not sound right anymore. My 10" sub doesn't even go on anymore when I enable TrueHD or DD+ regardless whether I let the player do the decoding or I let my Onkyo 605 decode it. My Onkyo even displays TrueHD in red letters but no 5.1 sound. Just Centre channel and both L & R fronts only have sound which does not sound properly.

It sort of sounds like regular Stereo but very clear Stereo with absolutely no bass coming from my sub. Now I am not the only person having this problem I just want to put this out to see if anybody else is having this problem with the A35 or any other player ever since the 4.0 firmware. I got new HD DVD movies with DD+ and TrueHD and I want to watch them with the proper sound.

Boy I hope Toshiba resolves this issue. I wonder if I should go back to the previous firmware? Any thoughts?

Thanks,

By the way DD, DTS HD, DTS etc. all sound awesome, just TrueHD and DD+ have issues.

Try unplugging the player from the wall for a couple of hours and see if that resolves the issue.

I had 4.0 in my A20, but I hex edited the code on version 2.7 and went back to that. I was thinking about going back to 4.0, but now I might just wait for this issue to be resolved.

I will try unpluging the player for the night just to see if it fixes itself. There are others on the AVS titled "**Official Toshiba HD-A35 (ONLY) Thread**" which are having the same problem with the A35.

Try running the update from a disc again and see if that solves the issue.

Yes, I tried updating it with the disc and even the internet connection but no luck, it displayed the player is already upto date. I did unplug the player last night for several hours, so today I will test it out.

One thing I failed to mention is my 19 month old daughter pulled my Onkyo 605 and ripped out a few banana plugs out of the back while my wife was watching a movie. This all happened when I was at work. :crying: So I checked the back and put everything back to way it’s suppose to be.

So now I am not sure if this may be the cause for the TrueHD and DD+ lacking audio or the 4.0 firmware update. Why does DTS HD and DD work great but not TrueHD or DD+? THis is why I still think it may be the 4.0 firmware.

Another guy cannot get TrueHD and DD+ with his Panasonic Digital Receiver after the 4.0 update but his Yamaha sounds great and all works. Maybe I am getting the same issue with my Onkyo?
I just hope nothing got shorted out or something.

I don't own an HD-A35 any longer but I do own several different Toshiba HD DVD players running firmware version 4.0 and I have not noticed any Dolby TrueHD audio problems. I have not noticed dropouts or lesser quality audio. I find it hard to imagine that the players either bitstream or decode Dolby TrueHD differently now and the result is the lossless audio doesn't sound right. Dropouts would be more likely and possibly only happen with certain amplifiers.

The issue of importance with firmware version 4.0 is that it corrected the jaggies at 1080/24p with MPEG-4 encodes. That fix works to the best of my knowledge but if it introduces Dolby TrueHD problems, it would be a costly fix.

Thanks for the input. I will test out my setup later on tonight after work. This is after I unplugged the A35. If I still have the problem I plan on taking my setup appart to check the wires and such just to make sure.

Should there be anything I should know in terms of the A35's setup to make sure its playing TrueHD properly?

Thanks

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!
I fixed the problem. One of my banana plugs was touching the other which kept shorting out the sound. My Onkyo went into lockmode to save itself only if I increased the sound. I got rid of all the Banana Plugs, completely re-wired everything with direct touch and now TrueHD, DD+ and anything else I throw at my system plays and sounds awesome.

So problem was NOT related to the A35 firmware 4.0 update. :yippee:
