bklynrickel 03-21-2009, 01:32 PM I have firmware 2.8, but waiting on 4.0 from Toshiba. I tried hooking the player up directly to my plasma, but no picture. Both HDMI ports working on my TV. HD A2 works on red, white, yellow component cables just fine, but not on HDMI. Any ideas or suggestiong. I've tried turning the TV on first and then the player thinking handshaking issue but no dice. ?
It's not the HDMI cable itself. It has to be something with the unit itself in HDMI or the firmware.
Did you change the video output to HDMI from component? If I remember correctly, you cannot have both output and MUST change the output port to use. ;)
Hope this helps!

Just for clarification if I'm missing something, what is the output port? Are you saying not to have both HDMI and component attached to the player at the same time? I tried to do HDMI by itself with no success. Is there something in setup that I have to change?
Also, does the 4.0 firmware upgrade address any HDMI issues? Toshiba says that it does, but I'm not sure. Thanks.
Yes you have to change the output connection that is active in the player's menu. You will need the component connected so you can see the screen to change the connection and you can leave both connected, but you have to change the output for the video in the setup menu.

So, if I understand correctly, when I connect the HDMI cable from the player to the TV, I will see something appear in the setup menu on the player, and will then need to make an adjustment there. Will that appear in the picture sub menu on the setup menu? Thanks for your help.
No. You need both the component connected AND the HDMI connected since your player is already set to output through the component outputs. THEN, you go into the player menus onscreen and change the output choice to HDMI. You will loose the picture until you then change the display input to HDMI and you should have picture over the HDMI output then. ;)
Does that make sense?

Changing the display output to HDMI. I will look for that option, and get back with you. Thanks.

I have both the HDMI and red, white, yellow connections made between the TV and the player. The only time I get the setup menu on the TV screen is when I press Video 1 and am using the yellow input jack. Then I go to "picture" on the setup menu, and make sure that my resolution is on 1080i. I also set RGB to enhanced. If I then shut everything off and turn on the TV set to HDMI 2, the screen is blank. There is never an HDMI error reported on the player display - just nothing. I don't have component cables. I'm just using the included yellow, red, white RCA cable that came with the player. I don't see a direct option for changing display to HDMI itself, but only to "resolution" on the menu. I don't know. Must be a firmware or internal player issue. But, I'm assuming that folks had HDMI working on the HD A2 prior to the firmware 4.0 update.
I also spoke to the former owner of the player who told me HDMI worked fine.
Also, I am aware of the possible handshaking issue with HDMI, so I have been powering the TV first and then the player and still nothing. I've got a Panny BD 35 and a Sony BDP BX1 with HDMI - never any problem.
From this description, is there anything that you can glean that I am not doing that I should be doing?
I was wrong. The A2 does NOT have a separate output selection choice in the player menus. i must have been thinking about the A1. Sorry about the wild goose chase.:o
It appears your HDMI output is not working on the player but you could try a different HDMI cable and also try switching ends on the cable as this worked for someone else change as that sounds.
I think you might have gotten a player with a defective/broken HDMI output.

Thank you for your assistance. I had spoken to the former owner who said HDMI worked great. So, I'm going to try a higher quality HDMI cable. If that doesn't work, I must tell you, even with the yellow video plug, the picture on the A2 is astounding. I saw Sahara yesterday, and between the sound and the video, it was more of a movie experience than either of my blu rays. Go figure.:what:
You are only getting SD with the composite (yellow) cable. Was this the HD DVD version of Sahara or the SD DVD version? That is a very good looking movie from what I remember with many of the wide desert scenes.
Did you try using a differnt HDMI cable you already had? Did you try reversing the HDMI cable? How long is the HDMI cable you are using?
I would check out www.monoprice.com as they have excellent cables for low cost too. You should buy your HDMi cable there and also pick up a set of component cables while ordering as the costs are cheap and you spread the shipping cost over more items.
Hope this helps!
bklynrickel 03-22-2009, 04:41 PM I tried two other HDMI cables. One of which works great with my Sony blu ray, No dice. But, I picked up some composite cables at Target and I'm getting absolutely beautiful cinema at 1080i. No upscaled DVD though - just SD there. These Toshiba machines are supposed to produce upscaling to rival a BD 35. But I am a happy camper with composite. The HD picture and sound are wonderful - dare I say even better than my Panny BD 35 and Sony BDP BX1.
I may try Monoprice for an HDMI cable, but if it doesn't work, then I'm stuck with it pretty much what with shipping back and all.
Thanks so much for all your help PFC5!
Oh, and by the way, whoever hasn't seen Sahara on HD DVD really needs to do it. What a cool movie. I ain't kidding either.
FYI. It is impossible to get HD signals over a composite (yellow) cable. Despite what the player might be saying it is sending out, it is really only 480i that is coming out of the composite cable. Try hitting the info button on your display and see what it says about the signal it is getting. ;)
Have you tried running the HDMI output from the player to another HDTV to see if it is the player or a handshake issue? Does anyone you know have a HDTV with a HDMI input to test this?
If it does not work on another HDTV, then you bought a player that has a defective HDMI output on it. At the least get a component (red/green/blue) cable to connect to your display and the PQ will be much better. ;)
Glad to help!

I'm sorry, but the cable I'm using is component (RGB) and not composite, and it makes for the beautiful picture. I've got another TV in the bedroom and at some point I can give it a whirl. This whole ordeal has been trying: first two bad purchases on Ebay, and now this episode. Perhaps I should have just bought... my own movie studio. :) I think I'll just really enjoy the HD DVDs I have for now. I've snapped up a bunch of em at $5 a pop. Thanks again! Your A+++++ in my book sir ! You need a promotion well beyond PFC. :)
Yeah it did seem strange that you were raving about the PQ with composite at SD resolution. I should have known you meant to say component. :D
There really is little if any difference between HDMI & component for PQ, but you cannot upscale the SD DVDs without a HDMI connection.
I got a bad HD DVD player with my first purchase on eBay myself so I know what a pain it is. I did get a good one from the second seller though, but it put me off on buying another for now though. I would like to get a backup player if one of mine goes bad but I will wait until I have time to deal with a defective player then.
I would ask for a partial refund if the HDMI does not work with the other HDTV.

Well, I've got my Panny BD 35 for upscaling so I'm okay for now.
bklynrickel 03-23-2009, 05:19 PM Funny thing is that with the HDMI cable connected between TV and Player, the HDMI indicator light is on the player display which says that the connection has been verified. I'm using a monoprice HDMI cable that I had, and I get a mostly gray screen with patches of black and patches of rainbow colored vertical lines. I'm wondering if the player has not been compatible with my TH C42HD18 Panny. Maybe updating the firmware to 4.0 would contain a fix for this. What do you think?
Try hooking the player up to the other HDTV you have first and see if the player works with that display. If it does not, then it is likely a defective HDMI output and firmware will not resolve that. It could introduce new issues if that defect effects how the firmware updates.

Ouch! Don't want that. Okay.
lordofthesith 03-24-2009, 11:13 AM I have had trouble with HDMI cables just going out. You may just have to play with it and move it around to see if it is connecting properly. also make sure the cable is good by trying it on another player as well as check the connection of the TV it could be at fault to. trial and error solves many issues.
I have had trouble with ebay and electronics too. I am still trying to resolve a recent purchase where I bought a supposably new item( 360 AO HD player ). It was used and broken and now he says he has not recieved it when I shipped it back to him so no refund. I think he scamed me. Just have to be careful when buying on ebay. thing to ask with electronics...... make sure it has been tested ( be specfic ) that was my recent mistake ( new in box does not mean working ....) :P
Oh and PFC5 I have tried everything but my A2 still will not play any SD disks but plays HD ones great. What could cause that? Someone said it is a bad lazer lens. any thoughts??? You can look back at my thread to see what others have suggested. thanks.

No dice on the second TV. Tried 3 different HDMI cables all with no picture. Established dispute with Ebay. I Did not want to settle for a partially functional player

It does sound like the red laser died on your player. I have an A2 with the opposite problem. :banghead:

Glad you did this. I bet the guy who sold it KNEW the HDMI output was dead on it, but sold it anyway.
I would never sell my problems to someone else but it seems many people have no conscience and will do this.
