Dear Listers,
As Australia is about to get a few extra HD channels we thought we might buy a HD box.

The thing is our tv is not the latest. It is a Sharp Stero Serial number 04392 Australia LMTD.

So my question is is it capable and how do we go about it. Along with would you have a model preference.

Regards, Hawks [Aust]

Can't find anything right off on the WWW . Look at the back of the tv and see if it has hdmi, component, or dvi hookups. If not you'll need a new tv to get HD. If it does, there's no way for me to know whether it is 1080 or 720 capable w/out the tv specs. Where are you going to get the HD signal from? Cable, satellite, PC, or OTA? That will make a difference on what kind of box you'll need.

The serial number is meaningless information as far as answering your questions is concerned. What is the model number of the TV?

The short answer is your television set is not set up for high definition. You will be able to get digital channels ( assuming you are in range) using a converter box but it will not be high definition. Without going into antennas and signal strength for Australia channels which is are a set of whole different topics, you can view digital only in 4:3 mode or letterbox type mode on your TV. I don't know about Australia but in the US the government , the TV stations and numerous other sources offered brochures and websites on digital tv and HDTV .

G'day Box,
We live just a few km from the antennas of all channels available in our city.
When I say channels we have 4 main channels and 2 lesser channels.
Australia is not littered with television stations, a good thing or other wise.

Your Sharp TV is a standard definition analogue TV that dates from mid-2000 and it is designed to handle the 625 scan-line broadcast systems used in Australia and New Zealand. It has no HD reception or display capabilities. To watch HD channels on that TV requires the use of an HD set top box that will downconvert the HD broadcasts to the SD analogue signals that the TV can handle. In other words, with an HD box you can use the TV as a monitor to watch HD channels, but you will be watching them in SD.
