"A new licensing agreement will allow PS3 developers to access Nvidia's tools, for effects like realistic smoke, debris, and explosions.
PlayStation 3 gamers will soon be able to slosh around in realistic water, crumble rocky terrain with explosives and cut through cloth like it’s… well, cloth. On Wednesday, Nvidia announced that its PhysX engine, which enables more life-like interaction with 3D game environments, would be coming to Sony’s PlayStation 3.
Specifically, the companies have signed a “middleware license agreement” that opens up Nvidia’s PhysX toolbox to game developers working on the PlayStation 3. All licensed Sony developers will not have free access to the PhysX software development kit (SDK) through Sony.
“Nvidia is proud to support PlayStation 3 as an approved middleware provider,” said Tony Tamasi, senior vice president of content and technology at Nvidia. “Games developed for the PlayStation 3 using PhysX technology offer a more realistic and lifelike interaction between the games characters and other objects within the game. We look forward to the new games that will redefine reality for a new generation of gamers.”
Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed."
SOBAY310 03-18-2009, 12:41 PM I first bought the PS3 a month after it launched because this is what Sony told me it was suppose to do in the first place! :(

Will be interesting to see how this is used.
kamspy 03-18-2009, 12:44 PM It's more than smoke. PhysX is a physics API that allows for some really cool effects without taxing the juices too much. Applications basically include more realistic destruction of things, and better 'waving elements' like fabric in the wind, or grass blowing.
For those who don't understand the importance of this, here's some videos. One of Mirrors Edge on PC which has PhysX support, and the other on a PC that doesn't have PhysX support.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0xRJt8rcmY
The glass shattering in the middle of the video really shows what it does. Usually, glass shattering is just an animation triggered when breaking it. With PhysX or other physics APIs, the glass actually breaks at the point of impact and the pieces falling to the ground are pieces of the actual decal that was used for the glass....as opposed to just a generic shattering glass animation.
Do we NEED hardware embedded physics API's? Well, no. But they make the devs jobs much easier. Actually, the implementation won't be hardware embedded in the PS3 since PhysX is only embedded into Nvidea 8 series and higher. The PS3 has a 7 series GPU, so it's going to run off the Cell. Which has an upside. A dev can devote more CPU power to it and make it run like it would on a high end series card, where if you had a PC with an 8 series card, you could only run at that level.
I think Nvidea is gunning to get into another console next gen. Hence the aquisition of Aegia (guys who wrote PhysX).

That trailer was 11 seconds long, 8 of which were the ESRB rating screen. :thatsit
EddieDZ 03-18-2009, 05:12 PM thats some really impressive stuff! Killzone 3? LoL.. bring it

That's what I said.:p
Thanks for translating it to English though:D
kamspy 03-18-2009, 10:16 PM What it boils down to is developers not having to write their own physics code for the game. They'll get a nice little toolbox to use - Free of charge.
Before this, PS3 devs had to either develop their own physics tool set for a game
-or-
pay to license one like Havok or any other physics middleware.
So it will make developing easier in the sense that devs won't have to write their own physics code. PhysX is cutting edge and already has all the tools their.
Think about the time it will save. Time that can be spent on working more with textures, animations and general stability.
PS3 really needed this. I'm sure the developers (especially first party houses tied to the console) are more thrilled about this then we are.
Multiplat titles may actually now have a tangible advantage on the PS3.

jusHD 03-19-2009, 01:54 PM Damn thats the first I have seen of crysis looks like a badass game. Anything that could help get something like that on the PS3 is fucking great. When they shoot the tree's thats pretty tight.

Crysis was a great game until you enter the cave then the entire game changes and it looks like the developers half assed the game from there. I won't spoil it for you but if you have a decent PC I recommend checking it out. The game is freaking gorgeous. I'm talking about the original not warhead I have not played it.
There used to be rumors floating around that crysis is coming to the PS3 but I don't know if they decided not to do it.
The tree shooting is crazy. In other games you can take cover but in this they just mow them down. You get a guy on a 50 cal shooting at you and trees are falling down everywhere. Not to mention the water effects in that game are the best I've ever seen. Bioshock is a close second for the water effects.

yea, there was a rumor indeed

Well if it is in fact Warhead I may buy it. If it was just a re release like bioshock was on the 360 and PS3 I wouldn't bother.
I don't think I'm going to be buying many titles this year. I'm content with KZ2 for the time being. I've bought so many games that just lay in the corner. Sick of wasting 60 a pop just to play it for a few hours.
II SAL II 03-20-2009, 07:34 AM best smoke i have ever seen in a game to date is Lost Planet
I have yet to see any game get fire correct. Gears of War has the very worst fire effects.

Here Here! Renting for me now, even then I find I don't have the time to touch a game until the weekend...

I have to say I've found I barely have time lately. What I've started doing is just buying "staple" games I know will see continuous play for at least the year to come.
Rock Band, Singstar, Mario Kart, Mario Strikers and FIFA 09 for example have practically any multiplyer gaming sessions with friends covered. So it's worth shelling full whack out for them, and then everything else I now just pick up as odds and sods between the gaps and the odd biggie such as I bought KillZone 2 the other week, but I'm really enjoying that, and it'll get a new lease of life (as will Little Big Planet) when I move in May and get a proper Internet connection through PSN.
Other than that, the XBLA/PSN releases have me excited enough to not need to shell out £40 a game. I'm loving Peggle right now
