3dfuzion 03-07-2009, 09:07 PM It's been almost over 6 months since I last updated my Toshiba's HD DVD player firmware. Has Toshiba released anything new to owners of the Toshiba HD DVD player model: HD-A20? If so, what's the release date version build? Thanks! :D
PrinceLH 03-07-2009, 10:35 PM I wish that they would do a firmware update. It's getting tiresome, for every other HD DVD to freeze or drop frames. I know that I'm probably going to get scorched, but I see why Blu won the war, with all of the problems with different HD DVD disks, compared to my Blu Ray player.:what:
3dfuzion 03-08-2009, 01:33 AM I own Sony Blu-ray also. I would at least like to see one more Toshiba firmware update for all players. This would clear alot of matters up with every HD DVD movie available. Just one big final firmware update is all we really need to make one more great hand shake with each device old new new.

I am not seeing many problems at all with HD DVD discs using firmware version 4.0. Right now, I only have the Toshiba HD-A30 and HD-A1 connected but I have many back up players for the future. I have used an HD-XA2 and HD-A20 some and those players both worked fine during brief testing. I do see some problems with HD DVD playback so compared to the PS3, which never has a problem with any disc for me, the problems might seem significant but I don't have any serious complaints about HD DVD playback issues. I think the second generation players are best overall for HD DVD and I do know there are some import HD DVD's that create issues for many HD DVD players. There are also a few HD DVD's that had manufacturing issues such as "Battlestar Galactica: Season 1" which I have seen first hand but those are rare.
I do have to agree that comparing hardware you have one reason Blu-ray won. The PS3 loads everything quickly and decodes everything and plays everything flawlessly and that means it was a lopsided mismatch in terms of hardware and Blu-ray had that advantage early on. Becaue of that and the great value, the PS3 sold in the millions for HD media playback, more than all other players for both formats combined during the format war. Now current standalone Blu-ray players are as good or better and less expensive than the PS3 for Blu-ray playback, but it wasn't always that way so without the PS3 the hardware advantage during the format war wouldn't have been notable.

HDMI handshake issues were common for me with some early firmware versions with some players but there is nothing noteworthy now at 4.0 for me.

ChrisIt could also be a software issue that causes some of the freezing. I had a new copy of Cinderella Man in my A30, last week, and I had one feeze in it. Almost half of the disks that I've played in both of my machines, have had glitches. There definately is some issue, somewhere.
Other than having my A1 & my A2 not playing HD DVD discs anymore I have had zero playback issues with either of my A20s.
I think if you are having playback issues it is either a defective player (likely the memory module or the cache needs to be cleared & player rebooted) or the disk might have a film on it that very hot water removes.
bklynrickel 03-08-2009, 03:25 PM that 4.0 is not sufficient? I just purchased an HD A2 assuming that everything was cool since the technology is older? I thought all the wrinkles would have been ironed out by now. No?

In my opinion, 4.0 is solid for all players I have, Toshiba did a nice job with that firmware.
Chris
bruceames 03-08-2009, 06:52 PM I haven't had a need to upgrade to 4.0. My XA2 still has FW 2.7 in it. If it ain't broke...

Have you seen reports of issues with 4.0? It fixes the 1080/24p jaggies introduced with 2.8 and is solid as far as I can tell. I don't use the player any really, holding it back as a back up and using lesser players only but 4.0 has worked great based on my brief tests for that player and works great on the other models I am using.
Chris
The_Omega_Man 03-08-2009, 08:58 PM Version 4.0 on all of my Toshiba players works fine...and I have no disc read problems on any of my discs or players. :yippee: (fingers crossed)

No, I haven't heard of any issues, but since my TV can't do 24 fps, there's really no need for me to do the update, expect for being able to play HD DVD-r (I have 3 discs sent by a friend from Japan, and I put 4.0 on one of my A20s for that). Actually I did try the update with the player, but for some reason it rejected the disc, and maybe it's because I have the player modded for region free, I'm not sure. But as long as it continues to play everything, I'm fine as it is.
unotis 03-09-2009, 05:56 PM All of my HD DVD players have the 4.0 update and have been perfect since then.
I like my PS3, but not as much as my XA2, probably because I don't play games and I don't find the load times on my HD DVD players tiresome at all anymore.

I confirm that the 4.0 firmware is playing the HD DVD-R discs.

ClashFan 03-11-2009, 07:56 PM I'm still running 2.7 with my XA2. I also now have a 120 Hz HDTV, and I haven't noticed any jaggies...
Anybody have a title or 2 I could try out to test for jaggies?

Version 2.8 introduced the jaggies and you would have no problem noticing it if you were running a version with the issue. If you don't need the fixes and enhancements that come with the later firmware versions, you can stay where you are.

I have to agree that if you are experiencing that many issues with movies, something is going bad with the player..I am still on 2.8 and rarely have issues with playback as others have posted..

What enhancements are there from 2.7 to 4.0?
Chris Gerhard 03-13-2009, 02:24 PM What enhancements are there from 2.7 to 4.0?
Mostly disc compatibility and HDMI connection issues is my understanding. 4.0 fixes the jaggies and I believe improves on 1080/24p performance compared to 2.7 but there should be specific information at AVSForums. I am running 4.0 on all players and recommend it, it appears to me to be solid.

I may try 4.0. Last night we watched Inside Man (which I got new on Ebay for $5 total), and there are quite a few pans. Every pan looked bad, kind of fuzzy and juddery. Maybe 4.0 will help?

I have that movie but haven't played it yet. 4.0 might help and it seems to be to be so solid, I wouldn't hesitate to update.

gameguru1360 03-18-2009, 05:46 PM what does firmware update 4.0 do for the A3??
I hope it fixes the issue I have with Transformers 2nd disc in that it doesn't recognize it as an hd dvd disc. First disc which is the movie plays fine without any freezes...running fw 1.3 on my A3
I would say you need a newer version than your 1.3 version for more of the new titles that came out. Time to update.
bklynrickel 03-24-2009, 06:21 PM I'm about to receive an update 4.0 disk from Toshiba. It looks from all the posts here that it is a safe upgrade. Confirm? I will be upgrading a new unit with the original firmware. Can I go from the original firmware straight up to 4.0?
Yes you can go directly to the new firmware as it is a complete firmware package and will work fine.

The 4.0 update on the A-3 is solid.

well I updated to 4.0. I still have an issue with my A3 not recognizing disc 2 of Transformers, but oh well. I have noticed that freezing or skipping on other discs such as Bourne Ultimatum are gone with the 4.0 fw update.
I'll just probably shoot for Transformers on blu-ray later on
