A newbie question about HD video

A friend and I were disagreeing about this. He claims that he can put HD footage on a DVD and play it in a regular DVD player. Not Blu-ray or HD DVD, but a regular player. And when I say play it, I mean in HD resolution.........Even if he used Mpeg-2 or AVCHD, that footage can't be burned on a DVD and played in a regular DVD player to my knowledge. Can someone shed some light on this?

He's only 1/2 right. You can put AVCHD on a regular DVD, but you have to play it back on a Blu-Ray player capable of playing AVCHD.

You can't put an AVCHD DVD into any regular DVD player and expect it to work.
