It might be worth it to wait, as they may fix the aspect ratio bug found in the XDE-500 and allow the XDE functions to be enabled on all formats (480p, 720p and 1080i/p).
I doubt whether the new model will list for substantially less than the XDE-500 is currently selling for, but it will probably be eventually discounted to $50-$70.
I believe they are going to a higher level of integration and eliminating some of the support chips to reduce cost and improve performance. If so, they may add this technology to all of their DVD players/recorders at that point. It's also possible they are only cost-reducing the somewhat expensive XDE-500 case by replacing the fancy clear Acrylic front panel with a more conventional molded plastic one.
The XDE-500 was actually a bit cobbled together from the "off-the-shelf" parts bin to get it out quickly--the new products will use more custom IC's which are better able to take advantage of the XDE processing capabilities. I suspect you'll be able to enable each XDE function (sharpness, color and contrast) independently or in any combination, for example.
