What you're missing is an HDMI input on that DLP...
I'm pretty sure that the Toshiba HD-DVD players require HDCP copy-protection handshake between the receiver and the TV when connecting via HDMI. That's the first thing I would check. Some DVI sets can do HDCP, though. Check your documentation. But if your set doesn't have HDMI, then it's not likely.
Component at 1080i should be as good as HDMI. you just have to run two cables (video, audio).

Did you disconnect the component cables, attach the DVI then shut down both the tv and the player. Fire them both back up and hopefully you are good to go. I was hooked up to an older Phillips with an A20 and it worked fine. Maybe try 720P also.

The display with DVI input needs to be HDCP compliant to work with HDMI>DVI. Some aren't but most I have seen are. My 2004 vintage Panasonic PT-AE500U projector worked fine using an HDMI>DVI cable, although Toshiba did mess up the connection for some HD DVD players with a bad firmware version or two along the way but I am sure 4.0 works. The specifications for your display should indicate whether or not it is HDCP compliant. As far as the difference between component and DVI, I doubt if you can tell the difference if the display is calibrated well for both inputs from that player.

While that may be true for HD DVD discs, the player will not upconvert standard DVD's via component but will via DVI/HDMI.
