Worth buy a Blu ray player?

I have direct TV and when you can get 1080p streaming movies is there really a need for a blu ray player? What are your opinions? Is it as good?

Blu-Ray players/movies offer more than streaming video. With BD movies you also get TrueHD and/or DTS-HD Master Audio sound. You can watch the movie you want anytime you want to. BD players upscale regular DVDs very well making the movies look great.

Those are the reasons off the top of my head. To me BD movies are superior simply because I know I'm getting the best experience viewing the media in a true 1080P resolution with TrueHD/DTS-HD MA sound.

To others, Dolby Digital 5.1 (which the Dish Network DVRs support) and streaming video rentals might be just fine.

I have a 60" pioneer plasma hooked up to a 722 Dishnetwork receiver & a Sony PlayStation Bluray player both using HDMI and there is a difference in picture quality. The PS3 is much better. I have the new Indiana Jones movie on my 722 and a Bluray DVD and I like the look of the PS3 better. It is darker and colors are more clear. In fact I don't know how Dishnetwork can say they are as good as Bluray1080p. If you do get a Bluray player get a PS3 instead of the stand alone player. They have better & more lasers to read the disc then the standard Bluray players. Plus you can play games if you like.:D

I would say probably yes for three reasons:

1) The quality is still better from a blu ray disc rather than streamed (even at 1080p)

2) There's a much larger selection of blu ray discs than what direct tv offers.

3) Blu ray movies have a lot of interactive features. Some are really cool (and I'm one who rarely used the extra features on a DVD).

Thanks for the great info. Also does anyone subscribe to NETFLIX? Looks like they have a large selection of BR. I nearly bought a cheap BR on Black Friday, but did not.

Yeah, I don't think DirecTV even has any 1080p.
