HDMI vs. Component - 622 & 722

It appears that the only solution to the faulty HDMI issue on my 622 DVR is a replacement.

I should be able to pressure DN into a new DVR - either the 622 or a 722.

Question - Is it worth it? I currently have the component cables hooked up and the picture is spectacular (Samsung 40" 650 120 hz). Will it really get better with the HDMI connection?

I have no problem pushing DN if the outcome will be better than the status quo.

I would appreciate your thoughts....

I see no difference, others claim they can (emperor's new clothes).

If you have a 1080p24 TV you will not be able to use Dish 1080p because it requires HDMI.

I currently have both connected, but use component because our WII is component and the family just pushes a button on a switch to go from Dish to WII, no inputs to change, no remotes to hunt down.

I agree with Jim. I do use HDMI, but only for the convenience of the single HDMI cable running to my receiver (my Sony 820 doesn't upconvert component for HDMI output). I used component with my first VIP 722 due to its faulty HDMI output and I don't see a difference.

It's all 1080i no matter what and the sound is Dolby Digital, so whatever you use you're always getting the most out of the DVR.

Now if they were able to broadcast HD movies with TrueHD soundtracks into our homes there would be ana rgument for HDMI.

I agree. I had my Vip622 connected both ways and the PQ was equally kickass with both. As long as you calibrate both inputs properly.

PQ will be the same but wouldn't the sound be better with HDMI rather than with L&R audio cables?

The VIP722 outputs up to Dolby Digital. HDMI can carry higher quality HD lossless audio, but the DVR doesn't even output that. No matter what connection you use you can enjoy Dolby Digital 5.1. Not all programming has DD. Most of it is in stereo.

You would want to use the digital optical connection between the 622/722 and your receiver for DD 5.1 which is the best sound these units are currently capable of.
