Was sent a "smart card" for the first time despite being a customer for 5 years. After 2 hours of tech support it's up and running but they wouldn't tell me why the card was needed. Anyone know?

They usually send them out from time to time to help tame the piracy issue. The new encryption is used to mess with the people that have illegally programmed boxes. Not sure why it has been so long that Dish has done it. This would be the 1st time for me too in almost 3 years, but have not received my cards as of yet. When I had DTV, they would do it every couple of years at least.

What happened? The install should have been smooth. Surprised they did not tell you 'why'. Actually, I think it mentions 'better security' on the document that came with the card.

Fk these smart cards. They need to come up with a security system that doesn't involve me or my limited brain power.

it's not that hard. you stick the card in, wait a minute, and then press select. why the fuss?

You are correct it sounds easy, except when you are in a continuous loop because there is an issue with the signal and DN rep tells you to try again in an hour. Another issue was the vip 722 was trying to record after I had started the "easy" upgrade. This through the system into a fit.

Finally got it working but now have occasionally have a yellow screen for a few seconds. This is new since the card has been installed.

You can stick it in if you want but I'd rather spend my valuable time complaining about it on the web.

It was easy to install the smart cards. You sure there wasn't a scheduled record programmed at the same time you were doing the smart card load? If you have a signal issue, it's time to call Dish to peak your antenna. I'll bet you even had lots of rain fade even before this whole smart card issue.

DISH Network has sent out the new smart cards for two purposes.
1. To counter act piracy.
2. Compatability with the new Eastern Arc.

Eastern Arc sucks.

I finally did it today... System was remaining to upgrade since yesterday... I had a little bit of problem trying to insert the card all the way and it finally clicked in... After that, Dish took over and my system backed up to normal in about 2 o 3 minutes... Still, I am not convinced about the security issues, something fishy about these smartcards but I had no choice but to do it to avoid cutting in service...

You obviously have not looked at the number of Nagra-2 hack sites there are out there, and how they help people to steal Dish programming.

Hopefully Nagra-3 will slow them down for a little while.

I received 2 smart cards.
The interesting thing is that I never had smart cards in my ViP211 and 811!

Yes, some recievers came with an internal version of a smart card.

My 510 and 722 did not have a card till they sent them.

The good thing is the card killed my 510 and now i have another 722, free of charge.

And yes, you may not think of it being a bid deal, but there are numours people out there using the pc cards and alogrithems getting free dish. I know 2 people myself. I think it its easier to just pay them, these guys have to put in new keys every week or so, and thats after someone finds the key and posts it. I just make fun of them while they have no tv for 10 out of 30 days.

THeres something about canada too isnt there?? Seems like most of them steal dish, no law about it or something up there?

So much effort along with risk of criminal prosecution, just to watch TV. I guess it's all about getting away with something.

This is an old article but gives some historical perspective:

I guess it's time to move! :D

I can remember several years ago when a ring was caught in Bermuda with stolen descrambling chips bound for the states.
They were used for the older 'C' band setups.
