722 Stuck in a Restart Loop

Sunday morning I woke to find my DVR acting up in a very annoying way. The fan was on 100% and making a ton of noise. After a minute it would die down, but for only a moment before it would happen again.

I felt it on all sides and it was barely even warm, so it couldn't be trying to cool down. I shut it off for a minute and it seemed OK. It started again not long after that and it ended up becoming background noise I didn't notice.

That was until I tried watching TV. Sunday night we watched TV for about 15 minutes before the screen goes black and the fan noise is back. I realized then that it was restarting! It had been restarting itself all day. After about 5 minutes the picture returned and we watched our show for a bit longer (maybe a half hour) and it happened again. Only this time it took a good 10 minutes to restart.

I'm going to call Dish at lunch to get a new unit sent to me, but it's so depressing. We have probably 5 episodes of Fringe and 2 episodes of House we've missed due to busy schedules and now we'll never see them. Not to mention the various movies and other things we've recorded that we enjoy watching on occasion.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I had a simular issue with my old Vip622. I started rebooting every so often and gradually got worse over time. To the point it would reboot every 10 to 15 minutes. They sent me a new 1. They wanted to charge me $30 bucks or something to ship me a new 1 (since I don't pay for the service), but I pitched a fit and they sent it to me for free.

That's exactly what happened Bigloww. In fact, it was so bad by the time I was on the phone with them that it was restarting immediately after turning on. Right now it's basically a small heavy fan that makes a lot of noise and blinks occasionally.

I opted in on their $5 a month protection plan, so they're sending me a new one 2nd Day Air without any argument. This will be my third VIP722, so I'm kind of glad I have that now. The first had a faulty HDMI port.

i'm having that same problem with my 612. one morning a few weeks ago i turned on my box and the fan was real loud and only the green/yellowish lookin light was on. the blue light wasn't on and it took forever for it to come back on.

now its getting worse and worse just randomly cutting off only to hear the horribly loud fan. its getting so frustrating!!! i called the guy who installed my dish and he told me to give him a call if i ever needed any help. he said "you'll wait forever if you call dish".

so he put in an order for me a new one today. i very much hope this doesn't happen again!

The new 722 arrived this afternoon, so maybe the third time will be the charm. Surprisingly, by watching my shows on Hulu via the PS3 I haven't even missed having a receiver. I won't get rid of Dish because Hulu isn't all HD, but if HD streaming becomes more widely available I think I'll eventually ditch Dish. That would save me $900/year; crazy.

How much space should the VIP722s have to make sure they aren't overheating? I think the 722 was just bad luck, but I still wonder. I'll be checking the temperature on this new one, but it in my new cabinet it has 5" above and behind it, 7" to the left of it and the right side is open (there are no sides covering the top section where it sits). That should be sufficient, no?

Sounds sufficient, I have about the same opening.
