I just purchased a Yamaha RX-V363 receiver to go along with my Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S350 and Samsung LN46A650 LCD.

My first question is why do I need to connect video cable to this unit if it's just for audio? I have HDMI cable from my FIOS HD box to the TV and a digital coaxil to the Yamaha and the same setup for the Blu-Ray.

The sound is good however I can't get the subwoofer to work. This is not a powered subwoofer, but I atleast thought it would provide some sound. I doubled checked that connection and verified the settings to make sure it is set to 5.1 . when I go through a sound test via the menu all the speakers work independently except the sub. The sub is working when connected to my old system.
Any thoughts?

P>S> I know this system is nothing special, but I am on a budget.

Check to see if there is a setting in the br player menu. You may need to enable it.

The problem is not just Blu-Ray specific.
When no other component is on except for the receiver and its going through the test mode with each speaker individually, I can hear the sounds from all except for the sub.
The display flashes on each speaker its sending a sound to, and I can see when the sub. is flashing. I also raised and lowered the db levels.

O.K. just to give an update. I got a powered sub. and it works fine. I still don't understand why video has to got through the receiver?

Video doesn't have to go through the receiver. If you do run the video throught the receiver you can probably use the Yamaha remote to control the TV(instead of two remotes).

ok when u conect via hdmi it gives you the best sound and video for your blu ray player, your receiver looks like it does'nt decode hd formats like true hd/dts master audio etc.so the best you will get i think is muliti channel pcm.the sony bdp s350 decodes all hd formats via bitstream, talk to pfc5 for more info.
