jsagraves 12-13-2008, 07:44 PM I currently have a 622 receiver and because all my other components are black, the silver casing sticks out like a sore thumb. We only have one HD television so the "dual mode" doesn't concern me, as long as I can use PIP. I'd like to have a black case to match my other components (I know this is anal retentive), and didn't know if I could upgrade to the 722 or downgrade to the 612. I know its a larger hard drive with the 722, but don't know how much it would cost me to do so.
What is the difference (other than dual mode) from the 622 to the 612? Is there a difference in the size of the hard drive? Can you do PIP? Does the 612 still have 3 tuners (2 sat, 1 ota)? If they charge to upgrade from the 612 to the 622, would they pay me back to downgrade back to the 612? :-) Any thoughts on this are appreciated.
tweekshook 12-13-2008, 08:06 PM The 612 Receiver DOES NOT support PIP, which is the stupidest thing in the world, I know i really don't understand it either. And they will charge to 'downgrade' to a 612 because to them it is technically an upgrade. Your best bet would be the 722. And it does still have the 1 OTA Tuner.
Any more questions, feel free to ask.

jim5506 12-14-2008, 02:23 PM The new ViP722k (out in a month or so) will have a module that allows it to record 2 OTA and 2 sat channels all at the same time - 4 TUNERS.
ssidave 12-14-2008, 02:46 PM Get the 722 and put it in single mode. More recording time AND pip.
merlen 12-14-2008, 06:57 PM I have (2) Model 612's. The OTA tuners are VERY weak and do not pick up signals well at all. With the OTA connected directly to the TV, the signals always lock. On the 612, when they can not lock a signal, frequently it also locks up other channels with error 02. It has been a real pain.

Wonder how much Dish will charge to upgrade to this one. They are already wanting to charge a minimum of $75 to upgrade to the 722 and according to the rep I spoke with, it could be as high as $125...not sure what it depends on.

Excellent! That makes recording 2 HD OTA channels simultaneously as good if not a better option than having HD Locals through Dish in order to accomplish the same thing. Of course, having that too would be nice.
hotrod351 12-15-2008, 01:05 PM i bought the vip 722 couple months back. love it. can record two HD programs at the same time and they look perfect.
daleb 12-15-2008, 03:12 PM I suspect it will be worth the extra moola for the 'k' version, jsagraves!
I understand there will be an 's' model too, with built-in Slingbox...I think this is discussed elsewhere.. almost time to start packing up my 622.

The new "K" will be for the hard core TV watcher, which I am. Many nights I will record 3 shows at the same time.
ssidave 12-16-2008, 09:16 PM The plan is for Dish to discontinue the 722 and replace it with the 722K. I have never heard of the 722S, but that is not to say it won't happen. If it does happen, only the 722S will cost extra and the k's will be standard on upgrades and new accounts.

The K sounds perfect for my needs. I sounds like you can PIP with both local HD OTAs too. Any insight on a release date for these upgraded 722 models?

So far, after cruising the various satellite forums, (well, two) all anybody knows is "..this winter".
