I amgetting sick of Comcast and am thinking about switchig to a dish. I am trying to find out the pros and cons of both of these guys to make a decision. I want the HD Dvr on one tv and regular on another. The pricing seems to be really comparable. Has anyone used both and can give some info it would be great. Looks like you get Cinemax for a penny for a year with Dish. I can't get Uverse or WOW yet here in MI.
I also want the FOX Sports Detroit HD but it looks like you can only get that with the Premier package from Direct, and pay more maybe I'm wrong.

Well, I can't vouch for Direct yet because they come in Monday to hook up our service. I've really never heard anything bad about them and my bro-in-law who has had both said he liked direct better.
We used to have dish a couple of years ago so it was before we had HDTV but I really liked the service and had no complaints at all. Service was reliable and rarely cut out on us.

I have DishNetwork service for well over 2 years and love it. One of the many attractions for me is the fact that every DVR receiver can control up to 2 TVs. So I have 4 TVs connected and am paying only for two receivers.

I'm pretty sure it puts everything in the same recorded file so yes, and yes you can watch both at once. Their basically 2 different dvr's controlled by one unit.

Yes and yes. Regardless on what channel you record (TV1 or TV2), you can watch it on either, even on both at the same time. That is for the recorded stuff. Obviously, live TV you can watch up and downstairs at the same time, 2 different programs. You can also record 2 programs at the same time.
Furthermore, if you stop watching downstairs, you can resume watching that program upstairs.

The Dish Network 622 or 722 will serve what you need, HD on the main and SD 480i on the second TV.
I've had both satellite providers, started with Dish Network back in 1998 and was quite pleased with it, then about 2 years back switched to DirecTV as part of a package deal. I wasn't impressed, but was stuck with it for 2 years. Well, when my contract with DirecTV expired, I went back to Dish Network but this time with HD service. I got the 612 receiver and have been pleased enough with it. You're correct that the pricing is similar, but in my opinion, the Dish Network equipment is better stuff. My brother has DirecTV HD service and he complains about the sound cutting out. For my money, I'll stick with Dish Network. My two bits, for what it's worth.

I just switched from cablevision to dish network. It is by far better than cable. I had DTV for 2 years, about 2 years ago, and I would say both Sat companies are pretty close. Dish seems a little bit cheaper in the long run though. I have 4 T.V.'s, 2 standard and 2 HD, and the fact that you can control 2 T.V.'s with 1 box, saves you on the receiver lease fee's. The 722 DVR is great. Lots of guide options, and search functions with them also, which is one things that cablevision was lacking.
I do miss the NFL Sunday ticket with direct, but it was getting to expensive anyway. Which ever one you go with, good luck, they are both better than cable.

IMO, the consensus seems to be that the DISH 722 DVR is the best on the market. I have a 622 and an older sd dvr and I really LOVE the 622! I have no experience with Direct, but from what I read, DISH's DVR blows theirs away... :2cents
PS In another thread, I just read a rumor of a new 822 possibly coming out early next year...??? I have no idea if this is true or not, but it will certainly make me wait a couple of months before I see about upgrading my box(s)...!!! ;)

I think that you will find that Dish will cost you less, especially if you want to be able to record OTA as well as off the Sat. I switched from "D" to Dish 4 months ago after being with "D" for 10+ years. The differences are minor (PQ, # of HD channels) unless you want the NFL Package. The Dish 722 HD VDR is much nicer than the HR20 HD DVR series from "D". "D" does offer a lighted remote ($25) which is very handy.
