Slingbox Comercial on our DVRs...

I'm surprised that no one is "talking" about the Slingbox commercial that DISH put on our DVR's yesterday... :what:

(at least I THINK they put it on everyone's DVR & not just mine...)

Anyway, that ad makes it sound GREAT!!

However, I do recall hearing in the past that their HD box doesn't transmit TRUE HD, but I belive I read on their website that they claim it is still excellent quality and "looks really good"...

My issue isn't so much with the transmission of "true" HD signal, but whether or not I would be able to view it with my wireless iPod Touch over my wireless home network...

Their website says that Slingbox is not compatible w/MAC's yet, only Windows. But then it says that it will work with Apple TV and it will work with DOCKED iPods... It also says specifically that it will NOT work with an iPhone...

Well I want a specific answer regarding the iPod Touch!! I'm trying to figure out how it could possibly work on a DOCKED iPod, but not on a wireless one??? :what: :banghead:

Anyway, is anybody else wondering the same thing?!?!?

FYI, I sent an email to their customer service department last night with that same question & am waiting for a reply. If it will work on my iPod Touch, then it's a done deal & I'll buy it tomorrow!!

I found this while cleaning up some old recorded shows last night. I didn't watch it. I just deleted it. I found it sort of irritating that it was pushed onto my DVR. Sort of like receiving spam e-mail or a credit card application.

Slingboxes are very cool though. To answer your iPod/iPhone question:

Slingbox does not stream over a website, but an application on the computer. that means an iPhone and wireless iPod Touch would require a Slingbox app. A docked iPod could have the media streamed to it from the computers Slingbox software (I'm guessing there).

Slingbox teased an iPhone app, but never said much about it and nothing has been said recently.

Yes, I know it works via an application... It's the application that allows the streaming. Slingbox has aps for windows based cell phones, but not for the iphone. However, since a wireless iPod connects to your network the same way that a laptop would connect to your wireless network, then it should be able to work with an ap(let) from Slingbox, as long as they support the iPod touch...

Well, that's the thing. The app does not support the iPod or iPhone. Like I mentioned, they've teased Apple product support, but no news of a release or even what progress has been made.

I thought about it before I upgraded my phone, but I didn't want to spend a fortune on a phone that works with it and I didn't want to spend $100+ a month to get unlimited wi-fi, which you'll need to make it work.

You must be talking about the iPhone for the Wifi fee. I don't pay a thing for wifi on my iTouch iPod... :what:

Yeah, but you download stuff to watch, it's not live tv, right?

It could be live STREAMING video via the internet... Whatever you can get through the web, you should be able to get on an iPod touch wireless, with the GLARING exception of FLASH based streaming content. Apparently there is some issue between Apple and Adobe so iPods don't support Flash. Hope that changes soon!

The SlingBox works fine with a Mac. I've had a SlingBox Solo for about a year. A new version of the SlingPlayer was just released a day or two ago. There isn't an iPhone/iPod Touch SlingPlayer app yet. As soon as there is I'm getting it for my iPhone.

Have you seen anything from the company to indicate that they are working on one?!?!? Just trying to make sure that it isn't one of those things where it is just incompatible... :what:

I remember reading somewhere that a mobile SlingPlayer app for the iPhone/iPod Touch was planned but wasn't among the first apps available for the App Store.

The other thing that turned me away from it is that if you watch a live program via internet or cell phone it will render Tv1 at home inoperable for anyone to watch, they will be stuck watching Tv2, so if something is recording on Tv2 they won't be able to watch live tv at home unless they stop the recording on Tv2, unless you're single or you have 2 dvr's, then it's ok.

I watched it and deleted it. I forget, was there a discount for us on there or not? I thought there was.

I guess we will never get the ability to stream HD video from one DVR receiver to another receiver via ethernet with our current equipment :-(

still not up to par with Tivo which can store and retrieve video from any NAS drive on the ethernet network...
