Short answer: GET WIDESCREEN and don't look back.

If burn-in is a concern, go with DLP. DLP (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Samsung-46-DLP-HDTV-Monitor-HL-P4663W-/sem/rpsm/oid/95082/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do)

I think new games are coming out in widescreen, but someone else can verify that....

Widescreen is key, even i knew that most stuff on TV is still in 4:3, but all HD is 16:9 and so are alot of DVD's... my TV has 4:3 mode so i can watch news and stuff without them looking all shrunk, but i definately love the widescreen.. Cat PM lol..

i just read that you can avoid Image burn by setting the contrast and brightness below 50..? can anyone confirm that?

That's true along with the length of time you leave a 4:3 image on the screen. You should be fine as along as you're not the type of user that leaves TVs on all day in game mode.

Exactly. And here's another point that I don't recall hearing in this Forum, but I believe it applies and makes sense:

Yes, we proponents of 16:9 will admit that there is a teeny, tiny, little issue with watching 4:3 on a widescreen with phosphurs (like CRT). BUT, and that's a BIG BUT, more and more programming will be coming through in 16:9 format as time goes on. Yes, the changeover is happening somewhat slowly for many of us; :( but the point is that that's the direction we're headed. So wouldn't you rather have to deal with the burn-in issue now and have the problem subside as time goes on, rather than getting a 4:3 set and having to deal with bars on the top & bottom from here to eternity?

Then again, there's always DLP if you want to go on a week's vacation and leave the TV turned on..... :banghead:

Yes, but that would kill the DLP lamp by the time he got back. :)

hahaha Only if he's on vacation for a YEAR!

Gameboxes & PCs work MUCH better with a 720p/60 set, progressive scan & twice the framerate of the interlaced sets... AND most 720p sets use technologies that don't have phosphors (avoid CRT & Plasma)

I dont think the issue is much worse than watching tons of widescreen DVD's on my 4:3 Sony. In four years of watching widescreen DVD's almost exclusively, I dont have any permanent lines across the top and bottom.

In your case, playing 4:3 games on a 16:9 screen, the pixels at the very edge of the screen will almost always be changing color depending on background movement, so it wont be a real problem. The biggest thing with burn-in is the constant display of one color in the same exact spot for hours and hours.

You've got a better chance of seeing the speedometer in GranTurismo burn in since it doesnt move or change shape or color. I've beat NFSu2, GT3, and currently playing GT4 on my Sony CRT and have never experienced burn-in. And were talking 6 hour episodes here, sometimes longer when the stepkids are over and I stay up all night with the boys!

 need to be able to edit these for longer periods...

Need to clarify a little bit, I suppose over time, the picture in the center of the screen (the 4:3 portion) could end up dimmer than the portions that get pillarboxed, but once again, I've not seen anything to the effect... not that I can detect anyway. In all my experience, it has taken near blatant abuse to burn a screen, like leaving a text document on my computer monitor for 3+ days with no screensaver.
