I currently have an XA-1 that I got for $20 at FYE. It's a bit too slow and big for my liking.
I have been looking at the A2, A3 and A30. The XA2 seems to be out of my price range. Out of those three which is the better upscaling player? And anything else I should know about the differences?

Of course the XA-2 is the best upscaler but within your price range the A2 and A20 are better upscalers than the A3, A30, and A35.

Why is the A2 better than the A30, isn't the A30 1080p?

When the 3rd generation players (A3, A30, A35) were made Toshiba used a lesser upscaling chip to reduce costs.
It really doesn't matter whether it's a 1080i or 1080p player as your TV deinterlaces the i to p. The source is 1920x1080 in either case.

Yes, as far as a SD DVD upscaling I would rate them like so:
XA2, A2/A20 and then the rest are all below that.
