34hs420: problems with component & HD

I have a Sony 34HS420 that appears to refuse displaying HD content over the component lines. I'm connecting my older XBOX via the high-def pack using component cables (I've tried both input 5 & 6) and have tried a number of games but the TV always displays in 4:3 and SD. I have the option to change to Zoom or some other setting but why should I have to? The same Xbox works fine on a friends HD TV.

I've tried a number of different things with no luck. ANY help with this would be appreciated.

You might have better luck posting in the gaming subforum, since it sounds more like an XBOX issue than a SONY issue--if you are actually sending the HDTV an HD signal, it's not going to downscale it to 4:3 SD.

I don't know a lot about the XBOX, but I believe you need to have it set for NTSC, have the HD modes enabled on the dashboard and the game itself has to support HD display.

Are you saying that the same XBOX, with the same setup, running the same game and using the same component cables produces a widescreen HD picture on a friend's HDTV, but not on your SONY? Or are there other variables involved?

That's the odd part. The same xbox with the same cables with the same game displays in 16:9 (unstretched) on another HD TV. I don't believe it's the XBOX.

I'd check it again to make sure.

No HDTV will convert a widescreen HD signal to 4:3 SD. HDTV's will take a 4:3 SD signal and upscale it to HD widescreen, but since you said the picture on your friend's HDTV wasn't stretched, then that's not what's happening. Are you sure it's not stretched on his HDTV when in widescreen mode?

Are you running literally the same game--that is the same disc you used at home and not your friend's copy?

Just read your thread, I also own a Sony KV-34HS420 and I am currently using a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V DVD/VHS recorder in the video 5 position using component viseo cables, when first hooked up everything was fine. Since I don't use the Panasonic to watch SD/DVD's with (I use a Toshiba HD-A2 via HDMI for that) and I don't record much, it's been quite sometime since I last used it.

Recently I needed to record a local T.V. program and I noticed a weird greenish tint to the picture which wasn't there the last time the unit was used (several weeks ago, using a VHS tape). I recorded the program anyway and after finalizing the disc, tried it in another player and the color was great leaving me to believe the component video inputs (at least on video 5) on the set are the problem.

I haven't tried the Panasonic on video 6 yet, nor S-Video, (or HDMI) to try to see if there's a diffference. Just wondering if you had any success trying different inputs or if you researched the problem further?

When I get the time I'll try different inputs to try to isolate the problem, and I'll post it here.
