Probably an easy question, if you could help me out..

I'm interested in this system.

Onkyo-HT-SR700S

Apparently, I can't link yet, so...

I've found it doesn't have an HDMI pass-through. As best I can tell, it's not even a DVD player. That part is OK with me. My intention is to Play DVD and Blu Ray with a PS3.

But...can I get good quality sound without having an HDMI on the Onkyo system? Would I just run the HDMI from the PS3 to my TV, then use the PS3's audio outputs to the Onkyo's audio inputs?

If I can do it that way (which I'm presuming I can)..is there a big gap in sound quality between that, or actually running sound via HDMI? Is there some other way I don't know about?

I see the Onkyo HTS5100 as well.

So I understand I'd need an optical cable or whatever, since I can't transfer the sound through HDMI. Fine.

What I'm wonder is (since this one is cheaper)...is this HTS5100 a nicer home theater, or is the 700s nicer?

And..gimmie a break..1200 watts? Let's get real. It's not a lowered honda with 20's on it. But why is it touting 1200 watts vs the other (more expensive) unit's 680 watts? What am I missing?

I've been reading around, and have prettymuch figured it out. It looks like a lot of people are using these setups.

Thanks

1200 watts is an approximate "total" of 7x130 watts + 260 watts for the powered sub. It's all marketing - their rating of 130 w/channel is at 0.9% total harmonic distortion....most top end amplifiers rate RMS output at 0.05% THD or less. In other words, if you can accept the possibility of amplifier induced distortion, you can "push" the amplifier harder.

All that aside, the receiver supplied in the newer Onkyo HTiB's, the HT-S3100, S4100, S5100, S6100, S7100 and S9100 sets has more then enough real power for the speakers supplied. The older "SR" series has been discontinued.

The HT-S5100 handles HDMI video, but needs Toslink optical or digital coax cables for 5.1 audio. DVD players are a $30 to $50 commodity item now.

If you want to get the most out of your PS3 as a Blu-Ray player, consider the HT-S6100 set (or models above like the 7100) handles HDMI audio and video on one cable.

currently "out of stock", but they often have them as factory refurbs.

Thanks for the reply.

I ended up ordering the 5100, along with the optical cable. I have it up and running. I still don't have my TV, so I have this BOOMING home theater and new PS3 with a 19 inch TV..LOL The subwoofer on this thing is insane. I think it was totally worth it to forgoe buying something with a DVD player in it as well. What you get back in quality in the rest of it is nice.

The 6100 was really out of my price range. The discontinued SR model was still for sale on Amazon. I really only didn't go for it because it only came in silver, and I wanted black.

It's a pity I have an upstairs neighbor and I can't really crank it!
