How did he get this name when he has not pitched in a big game until this season?? I'm confused.

I am sure someone on here will remember the details, but I do remember ESPN telling how he got the name & I believe it was very early in his career in the minors. Like I said someone else would know the details that watched it & has better memory than I do.

EDIT: I got curious myself since I had just heard the story a couple days ago & can't remember. But I searched the best I know how & can only find where it says he recieved the name a long time ago in TB's farm system.

Sorry, the 'Big Game James' name belongs to none other than to ex Laker James Worthy.

Yea Shields always says that name belongs to Worthy in the interviews I read.

:offtopicNot to turn this into a hoops thread but I remember James Worthy made the most awesome move finished by a thunderous dunk against Phi Slamma Jamma when he was at UNC. Worthy was near the corner on the baseline & blew by two defenders on the baseline & come out & done a rim shaking dunk in someone's face, can't remember if it was Hakeem, but the move & dunk was unforgettable. It made Worthy my hero for awhile & my respect for his whole career as he made many great moves & "Big Game" winners for UNC & LA. Definitely deserves the name Big Game James!

Exactly. A guy like Worthy earned that name. Not saying Sheilds can't earn it, he is one hell of a pitcher. Just did not get why they call him that name currently.

He was one explosive player to the hoop, and had no peer running the wing on the fast break. My favorite game by him is Game 7 1988 Finals, in which he had a monster 36 point, 16 rebound, 10 assist game. Yeah, that game alone would earn him the nickname, but it was one of many.
