i had my Comcast cable regretfully installed today, but that for another thread, and i was lucky enough to come accross a tech that was into technology as much as I. he was a fairly smart guy and we got to talking about a meeting he had recently with the high ups of comcast.
one tech he talked about is wireless cable. basically what comcast is attempting to do is build a box that would go on your house which would still recieve a drop line from the poll but the box would send the singal to your boxes via wifi. i guess the hold up is security and stopping hackers from getting into your cable and internet services since it would be so available sitting outside. over time i see this service cutting down on tech jobs since the service could be cut off right from an office.
he also talked about bandwidth plans and honestly it's been a long day and i forget exactly what he said but i do remember thinking, WOW that's great.

Sounds exactly like what FiOS has already. So, again, they're very late to the party.
The news today is that their next version of their IPG isn't going to be ready until this time next year-- AT THE EARLIEST.
God... I can't wait to cut the cord already! Monday can't get here soon enough, because that's when Verizon is coming to install the FiOS.
If I haven't said it before, I hate Crapcast. What are really getting with them? Hope you like your HD lineup, because the customer service agent told me yesterday there's no plans to add any more for another 3 years. Don't expect your internet to get any faster either.

wow really Verizon has that tech already. please show me an article on verizon having this tech already installed on homes. comcast isn't just planning on having this tech one day but they are already testing it. i would honestly love to see an article so i can see if the tech really works and what people thought about wifi boxes and how HD held up in different climates.
no more HD and no speed increase:
that's just a complete misinformed agent. Comcast literally upped their speeds yesterday, doubled. infact i know for a fact that their agents are no informed because i also got the same info from a couple sales agents and the ones who knew about the higher bandwidth didn't have the right numbers. the tech that came by just came from a meeting and had the paper work which showed how much the speeds had increased. their bottom end speeds went way up and they have a 50Mbps option, how much faster do you really need? honestly unless you're someone working from home and require the speed or have a business that has a bunch of employees on the same connection then you will never need that type of speed. it's like owning a Bently GT and never taking it on the highway, it's a waste of money. i game heavily and on comcasts old 10 Mbps speed i never ran into gaming lag, ever. now with 15Mbps being their entery speed and add their new upped speed and there is no reason to say their internet is slow.
as for my HD lineup it's pretty dam good. all the channels i watched with Directv are available with the exception of FX. i'm getting almost 50 HD channels and more HD multiplex pay channels are on the way, like what they did with showtime HD and showtime 2 HD. I know Fios is coming with more and that's great because i wish Fios was available in my area but it's not. calling them crapcast is only showing how immature you are and the pure amout of wrong into tells me all i need to know about you.
what's going to change bandwidth limits on cable:
bandwidth will not be an issue as they realize switches are going to be their saviour. switches will help to limit bandwidth use and help comcast improve their HD picture quality. it will allow us customers to shut down channels we have no intention of useing but they will be available with the click of 1 button. you will still get the guide info on the chance that the said channel has something worth watching but you won't see a picture until i click open the channel. currently NJ is testing this option and just about every other cable provider is testing this tech. it seems every cable provider is intesting heavily in this tech to help them save on bandwidth. some have already started major roll outs. as for the box there are 2 version. 1 looks like a long cable box while the other looks like a little tiny digital box. then on top of that the switch amps the singal so it's also acting as a singal booster.
service:
outside of the sleezy sales person i ran into for internet i have never had an issue with comcast reps. honestly they have bent over backwards to get me into promotions i didn't even qualify for in previous years and now i'm getting every cable station with a HD DVR, cable card, digital box, and HD box for $100 a month for a whole year.
i love being able to call them day or night knowing they will answer. with directv that wasn't always the case and many times i ran into foreign people i could barely understand. the customer service i got from directv was 100x worse then comcast ever had in my region.
remember comcast is not the same from region to region. you might get less HD and horriable service but up in NH we get great service, atleast in my case. the only reason i ever changed was due to that whole 100 HD channels thing. that came with the loss of VOD and horriable defective DVR's.
opinion on Fios:
don't get me wrong if Fios tv was available here in NH i would be running for them in a second. I love the multi room DVR option plus i hear the HD picture is outstanding. they also ranked 1st for service and customer satisfaction in 2008. my main issue is Verizon sold their Fios division to Fairpoint communication in the northern region. Fairpoint is said to be struggling bad and there are reports that they bit off more then they could chew. most likely they will be forced to sell out to the highest bidder and then who knows what's to come of Fios in my area.
my main issue is Fairpoint upped their prices without any notice. i signed into a contract of $45 a month only to have it turn into $55 a month a couple months back. my promotion ended after 3 months and my normal service was supposed to be $45 a month until late november. but they decided to change it to $55 after 9 months instead. when i asked why Fairpoint was quick to say we can change our service prices at anytime. when i brought up the contract and said that is reason to break it they said no it's not. i understand the terms of the agreement but them changing it another $10 a month before the contract is up and without notice is not good service no matter what company does it.
so good luck with Fios and hope Fairpoint doesn't own service where you live because they are laying off employees and raising prices to keep their company above water.

wow really Verizon has that tech already. please show me an article on verizon having this tech already installed on homes.
It's what powers their interactive program guide.
Here's is FiOS program guide and compare it to Crapcast's and then tell me if you still think Crapcast is superior: https://www22.verizon.com/Residential/FiOSTV/MediaGuide/MediaGuide.htm
their bottom end speeds went way up and they have a 50Mbps option, how much faster do you really need?
It's not the fact that I need it or want it, its the fact that other companies have been offering this option a lot longer than Crapcast has. Pretty soon, with media rich web pages, these speeds will become the norm.
as for my HD lineup it's pretty dam good. all the channels i watched with Directv are available with the exception of FX. i'm getting almost 50 HD channels and more HD multiplex pay channels are on the way, like what they did with showtime HD and showtime 2 HD.
Consider yourself lucky then. I live in a suburb of Boston and we have less than 30 HD channels. The official word from Comcast, and this was from a customer service supervisor, because I demanded to speak with one, they're not going to add any more HD for another three years. Since it came from Comcast, it's their official word. It's a no-brainer for me to jump ship.
For Comcast to somehow present themselves as being "ahead of the curve" and offering "1,000 HD choices" is misleading. Many other companies have been offering what Crapcast is going to offer "in the future" for almost a year now.
