Here's what I have:
Pioneer A/V VSX-815
Philips 42pf9630a tv
Philips DVP3960 upconvert
Scientific Atlanta 8300HD

I have the cable box to amp via component (on comp 3 which defaults to dvr) + digital audio. I put the audio of the comp in dvr/vcr in.
Amp to tv via component. Sound worked.
I'm trying to add the dvd player which has component and hdmi out, amp doesn't have hdmi.
I'm short component cable (for the moment).
If I run hdmi from dvd to tv, then I bypass amp.

Any suggestions? I can get any one component to work but get too confused, apparently when I have more than one!!!

Here's how I would hook it up. I'm no pro, but I've hooked up a few of these before.

Start with your cable box...HDMI out to your T.V....Optical out to your receiver.

Your DVD player...HDMI out to your T.V....Optical out to your receiver.

In this set up think of your TV only as a monitor for viewing and your receiver only for sound. It's O.K that your receiver has no HDMI inputs because they are being fed directly into the T.V. and optical is your best bet for audio going directly into your receiver. HDMI cables and optical cables can be had for around $4 each at monoprice.com if you need them.

Could be wrong but I think this is your best way to set it up.
