I use to have an HDTV -a Sony- KD-34XS955 that had Super Fine Pitch. It had a Fantastic picture!
What is Super Fine Pitch and do other companies who sell HDTV'S also have Super Fine Pitch listed as a description for their product..or is Sony the only one?

The spacing between pixels, or between wires in the mask, is called the 'pitch'... aka 'dot pitch' or 'mask pitch'... the finer (smaller) the pitch, the smaller the pixel can be - but it also reduces brightness... divide the image width (not diag) in mm by the pixel pitch (in mm) you'll get the number of horizontal pixels...

But in regards to my earlier posting....does Sony only use the name SUPER FINE PITCH or are other TV brands using that name too in their description?

I guess they use it as a marketing word... it's a general description if without capitals. No idea if any others use the term...

My picture on my 34XS955 had Super Fine Pitch and my Sony 34HS420 does Not.The 34XS955 picture was sharper and breathtaking. The 34HS420 is fair compared to the XS955.
Only the Sony 34XS955 and 34XBR960 mention Super Fine Pitch in the stats about their tv's.

Now you're seeing how comparing hard specs can tell you a lot about the image quality.
Only the XBR model has Firewire... irritating, I think ALL but the cheapest should have it...
It’s much easier to understand super fine pitch if you actually watch the monitor carefully. You will see pretty noticeable vertical lines (especially look closely at the corner or the side of the monitor when you watch a program) if the TV does not have "super fine pitch" feature. Compare to the other CRT HDTV, dot pitch of 34XS955 or 34XBR960 is much finer so that the vertical lines are almost invisible. That makes the image quality of those TVs look nicer and smoother (or maybe more realistic). Actually, Samsung TX-R3079WH (Slim Fit TV) is fine dot pitch CRT (it doesn‘t say “Super“, though), so I’m interested in seeing that TV.

I have recently compared those two (actually the 30" versions) side by side running the same source. The picture was actually sharper on the hs420. It shouldn't be I know but it was. When text came on the screen you could really notice. The XS955 had a softer picture, the edge detail was blurred out a bit. Both sets were set the same too. It must have something to do with some circuitry in the 955 making a soft image. While the CRT itself was better in the 955 the 420 had a cleaner un-filtered image. Really strange.

I noticed that the Monivision 34" multisync HD monitor uses the term "Super Fine Pitch" in referance to their tube (a Sony?) with a reported dot pitch of .36 mm.

Toshiba made the "super fine pitch" tubes for the Princeton AF3.0HD monitors, Monovisions predecessor. No idea who OEMs these tubes now...
