My norton subscription finally ends in about 2 weeks and im looking to can it because it makes the computer so slow. i always thought i had too much stuff running on my computer or spyware up the ying yang but after running tests about every 3 months it keeps giving me clean results. i finally have come to the conclusion that Norton just eats upvirtual memory on my computer.
so i have decided to get another antivirus program. can any one recommend one to me that ISN'T free and wont lag my computer. ive heard good things about McCafe but have never used it before.
thanks in advance

Isn't free, how come? I have found AVG free edition to be as good as any paid for subscription anti virus around. It has saved me and many, many others when Norton, McAfee, Panda, PC Cillin and many others didn't even detect there was a problem. Do yourself a favor and check it out. The latest version is 8.0.173 and it works better than the ones you pay for and is much lighter on system resources.

It does have fishing protection and checks email as well but no firewall. Comodo Firewall is free so you could download it and install as well and it works great with AVG. It is rated one of the best firewalls in the industry regardless if it is paid for or not.

Avoid those porn sites and you have most of it licked. Seriously, I have a separate laptop I use for surfing the net and I use web based e-mail service the does virus checking. I limit my web access to sites that I know are ok and thus have been running without that protection for about 5 years now.
I have had to use the recovery disk on my surfing laptop about 2 times to start over.
If you learn the source of bad stuff and avoid them the AVG is the best thing going.

The latest version of AVG will warn you of potential malicious sites before it allows you to go there. A very nice feature indeed.

Here's a link to PC Tools Spyware Doctor and Anti-virus Starter Edition is free and light weight on the system resources does protect you from those annoying pest online. Very good UK reviews on this package. I setup everyone's PC with the below.
www.pctools.com/mirror/sdastart.exe.
I also use PC Tools Firewall Plus both are free. Free updates which you can scheduler to run alone side of scanning the system.
www.pctools.com
AVG Free I've stop using that and plus the Vista version was a big let down this year and to me it never found anything or did it remove it or rename. PC Tools has found a lot of stuff now my systems including both Server OS are cleaned. When it 's cleaned your system runs as it should fast. There is also a small program called Regprot that protects the registry Run or Run As I would also recommend.

COMODO firewall is good, I use the 64-bit version on my Vista Ultimate.
I'd also recommend "avast! antivirus". It's a lot like AVG, and it is free unless you want to purchase some super-duper version. I've used both AVG and avast!. Even the free version has a lot of nice features for spy-ware and such.

Absolute bullcrap and besides it's adware. I don't know where you get your misinformation from but you need to do some security research before making such statements.

If you want the very best anti virus get Kaspersky. I have used every major brand and have found Kaspersky the best by far. Kaspersky is the only anti virus I have used which has never failed. It is also fast and does not slow your computer down like others. It updates hourly (completely in the background without you ever knowing it) and it is the first to update to catch a new virus. Kaspersky really is far ahead of the competition.
Also Kaspersky has a very nice user interface, and while it works better than other anti viruses it also works more in the background without annoying you or slowing down your computer. Kaspersky is easy to use but also is very professional and well designed.
While Kaspersky is not the cheapest they do offer significant discounts for return customer and multi year purchases.
I use Kaspersky Internet Security which is anti virus, firewall and more. I am a web designer and rely on my computers, believe me Kaspersky is the best!
BTW, you can try it for free, the trial is free for 30 days and is the completely full functioning version.

I agree that Kaspersky is one of the best and the other is NOD32. But they are both more resource hungry then the free choices of AVG and Avast. Now if you want or need the ultimate in security (which most people don't unless they actively go to known malicious sites)go with NOD32 or Kaspersky. Otherwise look at Avast and AVG free versions which offer very good protection for everyone.

I must disagree with you on that one.. I ran it on two servers it found more than anything I ever used prior. I've use a lot in my day. No spyware in the PC Tools software. Have you tried it?
AVG - nope
ESET NOD32 - nope
ANTiVirs - nope
Avant Home Pro - nope
F-Prot -nope
I need something run on Server OS and Client OS. I don't need something that's going to drag the system down.
Prior I was runing PCTAV, Spyware Doctor, Threatfire and FWPS
Now it's just SDA anf FWPS, everything is clean no issues. I always used Spyware Terminator but that didn't even find after the stuff of Spyware Doctor.
You can say what you want, I know what works and protects.. PC Tools has a lot of starter editions or freeware version of their software. Firewall Plus is 100% freeware like with the Anti-Virus version. You can get Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus in one I've posted the link for the freeware start edition. If you need more features then you have to pay for it. Threatfire is now built-in has a behavior anti-virus and spyware can detect threats before they start running around playing tricks as malware.
Today is not like it was in the early 90's where Viruses wasn't around that much. I first started with the DOS version of Norton AV then moved up to Windows 3.1 version. Still I've used Norton AV through the years then found out it wasn't really such a good program after Symantec took over. STill PC Tools has been taken over by Symantec but as long as the PC Tools side is still giving us free software I going to keep on using it.
AVG - I know a lot of you really like that software.. Good you found something you like to use. I just use PC Tools instead.

Kaspersky is not resource hungry at all, it is the least of any if you ask me. NOD32 has a good reputation, but when I tried it I was unimpressed.
Norton and Mc Affe are horrible, AVG is good for free protection but if you care about your computer Kaspersky is well worth the price. Kaspersky will keep your computer running at its fastest, will run silently with out being annoying or requiring constant attention and is absolutely the best protection available.

It may work well for you but many others have complained of Kaspersky's resource usage.
Your statement about if you care about your computer is only your opinion as many use the free programs without getting infections. There is no one best solution.

Kaspersky does not slow my computer noticebly at all, ever other program I have used does, some are horrible.
Actually Kaspersky is better, not an opinion it catches serious viruses others don't, this is a fact Kaspersky reacts much faster to protecting against new threats. Kaspersky is absolutely MUCH better and it is not just a personal choice tests have been done which prove it.
My own experience Kaspersky has not let any virus affect my computers with it installed. I have had virus failures with every other software within 1 year, Norton (which is ridiculously slow) was completely shut down by a virus and Norton was not able to be restarted or even reinstalled, others all have been affected in serious ways and cost me days of work to repair. Kaspersky has been the best protection I have used. I am in a computer business where I get thousands of spam emails daily and I am constantly attacked by viruses. Kaspersky has saved me many times where I feel other software would not have. So for my own experience I like everything about Kaspersky better, the user interface, options, interactivity and mostly the protection it has given me. I have tried probably about 10 different anti virus programs over the years and Kaspersky stands out like a beautiful new Ferrari in a parking lot full of used Kias.
I compared anti viruses again about 3 months ago when my 3 year Kaspersky subscription was about to run out and after comparing and trying many anti viruses I again renewed with Kaspersky for another 3 years. I only speak this highly of Kaspersky because I feel it earns it.

We need to bear in mind that 95 percent of viruses are delivered by email. Having antivirus and malware protection for a server and/or business computer is a much different thing then using it for a PC.
Although there are many programs available both paid for versions and freeware there is no ONE best solution. The professional security companies dealing with antivirus and malicious code prevention rate software by comparison. Eset NOD32 almost always comes out as #1 and Kaspersky as number two in paid for AV programs. Although some users with brand new super computers may not notice slowdowns or lag times due to resource usage by these programs, the average user with a normal computer can/will.
I base all of my recommendations on information gleaned from THE two foremost security companies currently testing and helping anitvirus vendors across the US and world (CERT and Virus Bulletin).
For the average computer user, freeware programs like AVG and Avast will do just fine as long as a firewall is used, like Comodo which is rated one of the best available.

I have used Kaspersky,Mcaffe, and AVG.
I have been using Trend Micro since 2000.
It was a resource hog in past years, but the 2009 version is very light. It also has a firewall.
IMO, it works great.
It also stops you from going to sites loaded with spyware/malware.

You are so right Rich_Guy. This is the number #1 rated anti-virus on the market. In terms of a paid subscription. Usually, it comes in a green shiny box and I have used the free trial version. Everyone knows that the best free anti-virus software is free AVG. Good find. I was going to mention this to our audience here. Good luck you guys and just use common sense and don't go to porn sites. I would suggest you do what rbinck said earlier. I have three desktops in the house and a laptop. Use one solely for your dirty work and junk if you want to fill it up with viruses. Although I don't advocate this practice. In addition, use firefox as a web browser and clear your history every time you exit out of the search engine you're in. This way you can't be tracked by those pesky sites you were just at. Good luck and peace.

Well I run 2 Windows Server OS and 8 Windows Client OS system. My email is protected by PC Tools Spyware/Anti-virus email pop3/smtp scanners. So all I/O is protected. I just said that these software from PC Tools works with all versions of Windows OS. The others are tricky when it comes to running on OS Server than on OS client.
Today you got more users at home running WHS now for media server.
Comodo firewall has limits on how many systems you can run it on last time I checked. Plus it slower than PC Tools freeware Firewall Plus which has a very good rating now.

Me style of protection is to run Kspy, Cmdo, AVG, and a couple of other tools about twice a month. Have not found a virus for years. Me also works on confusers, 4-5 a weekend, and me biggest tool in me arsenal is a little tool called MalwareBytes anti malware. What me finds is that malware is more pervasive, and a lot of times more difficult to remove than some viruses. The Nortons and McAffees are resource hogs - pure junk in me book. They actually bog your computer more than some low level viruses.
