Okay so heres my question:
My setup is dvr through the component to my tv.
DVR settings at component out at 1080i and 480 override at 480i
The question i have is that when I put it on an HD channel the front of my display shows 480i. When I put it on on-demand hd movie(comcast) it changes to 1080i and the picture is sweet. I have scanned through all different cahnnels even HD ones and cann't get the output to change to 1080i. Whats the point in having hd channels if your box won't send it out at 1080i. I need help.
If your box does this or you know of a show that you know it changes your front display please let me know.
Thanks
tony
Okay so an update, I randomly switch to espn2 and some fishing show was on in hd and my box switched to 1080i. Now my question is, even though comcast says a show is in hd, why is it not. How do you know what channels and what shows are actually in HD if the ones they tell you are hd aren't.

Some channels broadcast programs shot with standard cameras as "high definition" by adding their own black bars on both sides. Some programs are shot with hi def cameras and aired as hi definition...and the difference between them is that the "fake" hd broadcast is so crappy.
Also, what you're seeing in your info banner (on tv) is not the output of your tv set but the input it is receiving. Output of your tv is its native resolution.

Welcome to High Def Forum.
I have a DCH 3416. The front display say the time, rec, or pla. Nowhere does the box say what the output is except in the setup menu. Your question confuses me.

Here's what the situation might be. A lot of the low numbered channels on Comcast are just digital, NOT HD in spite of what the channel logo says. Try looking for the corresponding channel higher up in number, like in the 200's. THere you will find the same telecasts, like the locals in REAL HD and your 3416 will dutifully report it as 1080i.

Joewkewl,
I have the Motorola 3416.
Somewhere that is easily accessible I recall seeing a CHOICE between CHANNEL NUMBER and TIME for the display. I chose channel number (which was what the box was set for originally.)
NEXT to the displayed channel are 4 white possibilities: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i.
I think perhaps your having made the CLOCK choice eliminated the display of resolution. Try choosing channel...sorry I can't direct you to the menu choice right now. (Don't look in the POWER OFF>>MENU...it's not there.)
OK, I found it again:
Try MENU>>MAIN MENU>>SETUP>>CABLE BOX SETUP>>FRONT LED DISPLAY>>CURRENT CHANNEL.

You are correct that I choose time over channel. But I made a big mistake. I was speaking about the DCT 3416, rather than the DCH 3416. DCT does not say the resolution, except in the menu. I have 1 of each, and confused them. Gosh, my face is red.
