debgram 10-16-2008, 09:06 PM We just got the dish yesterday and had to have channels 2-13 through the cable company. We did have HD from them but downgraded. My question is, someone told my husband that we can get those channels back in HD with a antenna of sorts. Is this true?
Our Samsung TV doesn't have a QAM tuner.

Any OTA antenna will give you HD locals and you can connect it to the back of your DN DVR (if it has the antenna IN option) check your DVR manual for connecting antennas.
If you don't have the locals thru DN you won't have the guide for OTA local channels and you will have to record with the manual timer of the DVR.

Oh, we don't have a DVR, not wanting to record just want to view ABC, NBC and CBS in HD again.
So we would have to have the DVR?

Nope, just and antenna input. Unless you subscribe to locals, they won't show up on your "guide". You may get a stronger signal going straight into the TV though.

That is if your tv has a digital tuner. If it does, you may get the info that is embedded in the transmission.

It depends on where you live. Go to www.antennaweb.org or www.tvfool.com and enter your address. It will give you an idea of how hard over the air reception would be at your house.

yes we had to subscribe to what they call lifeline, channels 2 through 13, but now we don't have them in HD. I checked and the closest we are to the signal is .02 miles and the farthest 8.7 miles. So I wouldn't have to get a super duper antenna. Just have to find out if we have a digital tuner.
If I don't have a digital tuner but have the subscription to the local channels can I still use an antenna?

A Dish HD receiver will give you the necessary tuner, most new HD tv's also have them along with several older models. I have a digital tuner built into my dvd recorder. Whether or not you have guide data does not prevent you from being able to view OTA. Local subscription will give you guide data on the receiver, but guide info is avaialble a number of other ways.
debgram 10-17-2008, 03:54 PM From what I understand I would need a outdoor one? And medium range? Is this correct?

jpfrasier 10-17-2008, 05:02 PM I would definitely try an indoor model first. It can depend on the topography of where you live but I am 30+ miles from our broadcast towers and my Terk indoor works great on most channels.

Okay but an indoor one at medium range? What kind would you recommend? And it would have to be a VHF/UHF one, right?
garys 10-17-2008, 09:13 PM Yes, it should be vhf/uhf. Most of the channels are uhf, but 2 are vhf (WLIO and WLMB). You should keep note of the REAL numbers, you would need those if you have to add the HD channels manually. Dish receivers and manuals refer to them as Transit Numbers.

If I need a outdoor one, like on to put on the satellite I suppose a dish network tech wouldn't install it? We wouldn't know how to do it or attempt it.

Those types usually don't cover the range you need. And no, Dish techs do not have to install them. Not all tech will install them and those who can will not do so unless you pay them as it is not considered a Dish install.

debgram 10-17-2008, 10:55 PM I was wondering if this one would be a good one, Winegard GS2200 Sensar III
Oh from my scans I posted, what is the distance I would need? I was also looking at this one
Winegard SS-3000 Indoor DTV/HDTV Antenna
Also looking at this outdoor one, Winegard HD7015 VHF/UHF/FM Prostar 1000
