Will an external HD tuner solve my problem?

My town has fiber optic cable tv provided by our local cable company.
I bought a new small LCD tv for the bedroom with a built in HD tuner. I can receive the HD cable signals without any cable box.

The problem is that in the living room I have a Sony KV30HS420 tv that is HD capable. Is there any way that I can get an external HD tuner so that I can receive the HD channels on it? If so, which tuner would be best to purchase?

I have already contacted the cable provider, and they don't offer any cable box!

Your LCD TV is receiving the HD channels that your cable company does not encrypt via the TV's QAM tuner. (Your TV probably also has an ATSC tuner for receiving OTA digital broadcasts with an antenna).

To receive the same channels on your HS420 you need an external tuner that also has a built-in QAM tuner. One such tuner is the Samsung DTB-H260F which has both an ATSC tuner and a QAM tuner. It can hard to find in stores but it can also be purchased on-line from Best Buy and some other on-line retailers. It is a good match for your HS420.
