I have a Motorola cable box Model DCT6208/1000 that I want to connect to my NEC PC monitor, Model MultiSync LCD 2690WUXi. The 2690 has 2 DVI-D inputs. One is connected to my PC and the other I tried to hook to the DVI-D output on the cable box. It doesn't work as I had expected. I get an image on the 2690 but it is not HD. I tried turning the HDCP to "on" via the 2690's menu but that didn't seem to make any difference. Should I be able to connect this box to my NEC display and see HD images? If so, can you suggest what I'm doing wrong. Thanks.

Are you sure the DCT6208 is set up to send the signal to the monitor in 720p or 1080i? Are you sure you were watching an HD program at the time?

Thanks for the reply, DH. I don't know much of anything about the cable box. It is one that the cable company supplies. I know it has a DVI-D output. I browsed through the menus but couldn't find anywhere to set the type of output signal. I was looking at the cable box menu , which is supposed to be an HD, 16:9 signal, but it was not. It was 4:3. Perhaps you can suggest something specific for me to check. I'd be happy to do it.

With the monitor turned on, turn off the power of the cable box. Hit the menu button on the remote. I set up menu should appear where you can set the output of the box to be 720p or 1080i. With your monitor, I would suggest 1080i. Once you've changed that, turn the box back on.

Thanks for your continued help. I was going to try your suggestion but now the box doesn't seem to be working properly. As soon as I plug the cable box into the A/C outlet, it gives the following sequence on its LED:
E609
FR 3
Hunt
FR 3
Hunt
d1 (& cursor circleing)
I can not even turn the box off with the power button now. I have to unplug the A/C. I also can't get any signal at all to the monitor now. Is the box broken? If it were working, I'd try your suggestion but I can't get that far now.

It sure sounds like it's time for a new box. If you do get a new box and a tech installs it, make sure he sets it up to display HD. Check an HD channel before he leaves.

I've made some progress but still need help. The trouble I was having with the error message from the cable box was because the cable company was downloading new software to the box and it took 6 hours to finish! I was trying to use the box before the new firmware was totally installed.
Anyway, I now have the box hooked to my NEC display and I can see a high def picture for 180 secs. That's because the NEC display (Multisync 2690WUXi) issues a warning that it does not accept interlaced signals and allows only 180 secs before it shuts the signal down. Before shutting the signal down it says the incoming signal is 1920x1079i 60Hz. The manual for the 2690 NEC display reads "Interlaced signals (480i, 576i, 1080i) are not supported." It appears now if there were a way to force the cable box (Motorola Model DCT6208/1000) to output a progressive scan signal, I'd be OK. Is this possible. I've looked through the box's setup menu but can't see anything. Thanks again for helping.

Use the steps I mentioned above. Once in that menu, you should be able to set the output to 720p.

I can't get the menu you described to appear on the NEC display. I think what I'm going to have to do is connect the box to one of our actual HDTVs to get the menu you described. I have a hunch I can't get to that menu using the NEC because it takes ahwile for the NEC display to lock onto a 1080i signal and then display it for a brief time before shutting down again. My plan is to connect the cable box to one of our HDTVs via DVI and get the menu you described via that connection and set the box to 720p there. I'll then unplug the box and reconnect it to the NEC display. Sound OK?
