CBS!
I flipped through all the HD channels covering the debate 3 or 4 times- CNN HD, Fox News HD, ABC HD, NBC HD, and CBS HD and CBS was the clear winner for picture quality IMO. CNN HD looked particularly bad, the sharpness was cranked up way too high. ABC HD was way too soft. The rest were about on par with each other. I'm not sure if CBS is broadcast in 720p or 1080i, I believe it's only 720p but it looked great on my plasma. For content, CNN HD was the clear winner since you could see 6 of the pundit's scores and a realtime graph of Ohio's undecided's opinion, but like I said the PQ was awful.
Anyway, sorry for posting on topic. Back to the non-HD political talk. :hithere:
tipstir 10-07-2008, 10:18 PM CBS as a new HD engine so far it works! I don't watch the other news stations you have mention above. Again this all depends on your local carrier for CBS if they're not up to speed you can forget 1080i. Most are 720p or i.

Not true! If CBS is broadcast in HD be it by the national network or local carrier it is 1080i.
I liked CNNHD's little graph at the bottom showing the viewers reactions.

Our local CBS doesn't live up to true HD specs it's not always HD it's more like 480p. CBS HD should show up as 1080i or better. My wife was watching that geeks on CBS the one with that hot chick (SP should look like this to be considered HC) who lives next door apart. I don't watch the show as I think it puts computer people in a weird way, makes them look and act stupid or goofy. Anyway if I go from SD to HD they should look more sharp now the set says it's 1080i if you go to SD it's 480i. In HD they look more real.
Chicago OTA
CBS = 1080i
NBC = 1080i
ABC = 720p

Cool, thanks for the info Emil! I live in Chicago and I've always been curious about which stations have which resolutions. I knew about Fox being 720p but didn't know about the others.

I never knew you lived in Chicago, haha! Of course we haven't talked much since I sold my PS3. :(
tipstir 10-08-2008, 08:50 PM FOX has 1080i here, NBC and now ABC. Chicago I have only past through looks like NYC, CA, not much different. Just the food the Clubs and people.. Oh yeah the Wind..
rbinck 10-08-2008, 10:17 PM I watch the debates on PBS so I don't have to see any other stuff on the screen. The PQ on PBS HD was super.

BrianO 10-09-2008, 05:04 PM On another forum I saw the upcoming election described as: Mr. Indecisive and Joe Gaffe vs The Old Man and the C-Cup (with apologies to Ernest Hemingway).
Leave it to the french....

ABC and FOX broadcast 720p not 1080i.

Are you sure? Cox cable told me everything is 1080i.. All the 4 HDTV sets show it 1080i on what is broadcast in that format. Well I really don't watch the HD too much as you know... But when I do nature always look's the best..

The cable company upconverts it to 1080i, they receive it at 720p.
Rick-F 10-15-2008, 10:07 AM Some ABC local affiliates do indeed broadcast in 1080i -- for example, WHAS in Louisville, KY is 1080i. I would assume the same situation exist for FOX: while the network may be 720P and most affiliates also 720P, there may be a few local affiliates that are 1080i.

I sure wish that the networks would all go to 1080i now. Watching a far shot of a football game in 720p makes it look like SD compared to a 1080i broadcast.

As others pointed out, ABC is still feeding a 720P signal to my local affiliate-- they are processing that signal to 1080i and sending out locally via OTA/Cable/etc. Does this "processed" signal look as good on a TV as other networks "actual" 1080i . . . I don't know; I can not compare. But it looks damn good on my 1080P display. I do get the ESPN HD feeds in 720P-- I don't really see a significant difference-- now my cable box is processing this signal to 1080i before it sends it to the display.
tipstir 10-15-2008, 05:08 PM You know I'll have to look into this stuff... I see what's going on? It's been 2 years now and I though 720P was history?
tipstir 10-16-2008, 08:42 PM Okay I decided to watch this last debate in CBS HD, Sharp set detected it has 1080i. I was prior flipping through the lower bands to upper HD bands to see who was doing what somewhere 720p others were 1080i and 480.

Every HD station is upscaled to 1080i by my cable box. Once again for the last debate it looked like CBS-HD was the winner but CNN-HD actually looked really good and came close to CBS's quality. BTW, I was viewing on a 1080p plasma in case anyone was wondering.
CNN was of course the winner once again for content- Campbell Brown in HD. :eek:
