Having trouble update A3 with 4.0 update

I've burned the iso image to a cd-rw but when inserted in the player I get the message "Disc not in DVD format". I've repeated these steps several times with same results. Anyone have any ideas?

I think that can only mean you haven't burned the CD-R properly. I use Active ISO Burner 1.1 and have no problems at all. The file must be written as an iso file, not a data disc. The software I use is just a free download.

Also the file needs to be burnt on a CD-R disc not a RW so it can be finalized.

I've successfully burned and loaded all of the FW updates onto my HD-A3 using the same CD-RW disc. You can still finalize a CD-RW, you just have to erase it before using it the next time.

The only time I've gotten that "Disc not in DVD format" error message was when I accidentally used a DVD-R...which makes the error message somewhat ironic.

I also used Active ISO Burner 1.1 for my HD-A3 and had no problems. I used the internet to update my HD-A35 though with no problems.

Right Click on the ISO image and you should see ISO Burner asking you if you want to burn the ISO image onto a CD-R.

If you read the documentation of updating firmware it does say to use CD-R media and not CD-RW. CD-RW cannot be truly finalized and if it has been used over and over again can and does cause issues.

Assumption only. I have never been successful in getting the burned CD-Rs to work and each time I have followed the instructions to the letter.

Have you used the "Burn as Image" (wording may be different with different programs) command to burn the ISO file to the CD-R?

This seems to be the #1 reason why people have problems getting them to work.

I don't know what you have done and didn't say it was something that has been done wrong that causes the CD-R to be improper for updating. I do know that I have done about two dozen CD-R update discs writing ISO files to the discs using my method and it does result in a proper disc for this purpose. It isn't an assumption that the disc is most likely written improperly, I have been involved in too many discussions, that is a fact, it is the most likely cause. Is it the only possibility? No, I am sure it isn't but I don't know what else would cause the "not in DVD format" message I have heard about a number of times. It has always been an improper disc and writing the ISO file to a CD-R using ISO Burner 1.1 has always worked.

Possible things that I have seen that result in a disc not proper for the purpose:

Using DVD-R media
Usind CD+R media
Using CD-RW media
Writing the file as a data disc

I own the HD-A1, HD-A20, HD-A30, HD-XA2 and DV-HD805 and have updated all of them using that software and CD-R media. I have never had even a single issue.

Nope. documnetation says "CD-R or CD-RW disc"

I've always burned it as an Image file and verified it on the computer as such.

I can tell you from experience that CD-RW doesn't work consistently for this purpose and other purposes for me. I just use inexpensive CD-R media and save the disc since others might need it sometime in the future. I think it might even be that not all CD-R media will work, I don't know, but there are inconsistencies with CD-R media for me for many purposes. Because the documentation says CD-RW can be used is far from a guarantee that all CD-RW media will work and I know from experience I can't get CD-RW media I used to work.

The I would try to download the firmware again as the previous download might be corrupt.

Good luck!

You may be correct. My post was for the purpose of providing "truth in HDTV" information.

I neglected to mention, as further proof that my download procedure is correctly implemented, I have updated the firmware on my Blu-ray players without difficulty. Same process. Download zipped file, unzip and record Image file onto CD-R. Worked flawlessly on Blu-ray.

Did you try downloading the update again? It may be a corrupt download that is causing the problem. I know some of the first updates were corrupt and incomplete, and I thought it was with the gen3 updates.

It is worth a try. ;)

No, I did not because I have had the same problem with every firmware update. And have been twice successful with Blu-ray.

Have you considered the brand of CD media you are using? Many players have difficulty with some brands (Memorex and Imation in particular) of media and can't seem to read them correctly. Verbatim has always worked well for me but there are many other brands that works as well.

If you look at CD burner forums you will find that some burners work well with some brands of media and not well with others. I would suggest you try another brand of media and see if that resolves your issue.

Did CD-RW work flawlessly too?

Saw no need to try rewritable media since CD-R worked perfectly the first time on Blu-ray. For Toshiba I have used Maxell, Sony, Fuji and Memorex. None has worked.
