Hi Everyone,

Some of you may remember me from a few months back when I was setting up two 5.1 systems.

Well I am back :-)

My brother just asked me to set up a really old 5.1 system that he has had in the closet for a while. I have everything setup and connected right now except for the Sub woofer. It is a JBL PSW 1200. I was able to find the manual online but I do not quit understand it:

http://manuals.harman.com/JBL/HOM/Owner%27s%20Manual/PSW1000%20om.pdf

I am not used to that many options on the back of a Sub woofer. The two systems I have setup the Subs were much simpler, only having a Red and Black wire to hook up to the back of the receiver.

Can anyone help me out and tell me how exactly this should be hooked up into the receiver?

Thanks in advance...

Oh FYI the receiver that he has is:

Yamaha HTR - 5660

as shown in manual,

On AVR make connection using Subwoofer cable from Subwoofer out (use a Y splitter to connect to R and L on Sub).

For main speaker connection, connect left and right from speakers out on sub, set cross over in AVR to 80-100 hz (on subwoofer set crossover to 150).

In AVR setttings set all speakers to small with LFE to subwoofer.
For Center channel & surround speakers, make connections from AVR.

i hope this helps.

What is an AVR?

Also why would you run the speakers through the sub? I thought that the speakers should be run directly to the Receiver.

Another quick questions is 18 AWG wire good enough to use? All of the runs to the Receiver are fairly short. Front speakers are about 5' max. And rear speakers would be a 20-30 foot run.

Sorry but I am a complete n00b with this.

AVR = audio/video receiver, i.e. the Yamaha HTR -5660

after checking the manuals for both the sub and the Yamaha, I recommend you get a subwoofer cable with one RCA input and two RCA output connections
to run from the "subwoofer out" connection on the back of the receiver to the two "line level" RCA connectors on the subwoofer. In the setup of the receiver menu, set the front, center, and surround speakers to "Small", otherwise the receiver will not output signal to the subwoofer.

this is the type of subwoofer cable to get. It will have one RCA male connector on one end and TWO RCA male connectors on the other (subwoofer) end.

Hook the regular fronts, center, and surround speakers to the proper screw connectors on the back of the receiver. I prefer 14 gauge wire for all my "normal" home theater wiring....if your wire runs are less than 50', you could use 16 gauge. Make sure the connections are "clean"...no little wire wiskers poking out and shorting out with another wire - that can cause the receiver to go into protection mode and shut down.

good luck

Thanks very much for your help, I just actually found a cable very similar to that in his bag of tricks. Going to go try and finish setting it up now. I'll be back if I have any problems ;)
