This quote makes me hope the firmware update addresses the 1080/24p jaggies problem.

This firmware update improves support for 1080p/24Hz OUTPUT and auto mode(for HD-A30 and HD-A35), improves network connectivity for supporting the download of web-enabled network content associated with certain HD DVD discs, and also addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba.

I was able to download and burn the HD-XA2 and HD-A20 firmware, but the HD-A30-4000N.zip file was corrupt according to my computer and wouldn't burn. It may be the HD-A30 ver. 4.0 isn't completed loaded yet at the site. It downloaded a file that was just a fraction of the size of the HD-XA2 and HD-A20 files.

I had the same problem and shot off an email to Toshiba.

I have heard several reports that the jaggies issue is now gone!

Last night I also had a few problems downloading the update and when I went to unzip the files a message kept appearing saying it was corrupt so I ended up downloading in on the main pc instead of the laptop and it worked fine.

Who would have thought that after all this time that Toshiba is still supporting these products.

I am using the same computer I used for the HD-A20 ver. 4.0 which before downloading is shown as 39.1 MB while the HD-A30 ver 4.0 (HD-A30-4000N.zip) is only 7.01 MB. I have accessed a bad file at the Toshiba site somehow.

This is the link I used for the HD-A30 that grabs a bad file:

http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/firmware/HD-A30-4000N.zip

This is the link I used for HD-XA2 which grabs a good file:

http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/firmware/HD-XA2-4000N.zip

This is the link for the HD-A20 which grabs a good file:

If the links do not direct one to the firmware, just cut and paste this with the correct model number in the appropriate place and remove the [/url]:

Thanks for the heads-up. Nice to see Toshiba still supporting the FW for these players.

I have not had any issues with my XA2, so I may pass on the FW at this time. I may install it later though.

You could always download the file and do an ISO burn to a CD and get the latest update that way.

Yeah. I have to go buy some. All I have are DVD-R s. I just got off the phone with Toshiba and the guy said that they are looking into some 4.0 update issues that have come to their attention. I have to say, very nice people in their CS dept.

Same here as I don't have a 24p capable TV (yet), and the 2.7 firmware works flawlessly for me.

UNLESS someone comes in and says that 4.0 does something else other than just improve 24p picture quality...

I have played a couple of discs with 4.0 on my HD-XA2 and it seems stable to me. Has anybody read of any problems? I would expect at least one more so avoiding this one is no big deal, especially if you don't need 1080/24p.

Good, hopefully they put up the file that adds Blu-ray playback, or at least the file that adds XDE processing. I have downloaded it and will see what it contains.:)

Somebody should call Onkyo and see what they say. I am going to be on the road and can't call today. Here is a quote from the Onkyo website regarding firmware for this player:

If you are unable, or prefer not, to obtain the firmware update by the method described above, you may contact ONKYO Product Support (1-800-229-1687) and request that a firmware update disc be sent to you by mail. You can update the firmware using the firmware update disc by following the instructions provided with the disc.

Here is the link to the instructions for Ver. 2.8:

http://www.onkyousa.com/DV-HD805firmware_info.cfm

If nobody calls today and posts the answer, I will call tomorrow and see what I can find out.

Chris
I never had this 1080p/24p jaggies problem with any firmware version. Even firmware 1.1 ran nice. But I hope 4.0 doesn't give me the jaggies for some crazy reason. Who knows?;)

Onkyo customer service knows nothing about a new firmware update for this player. I called and requested one be mailed to me and indicated I expected one soon. I was given a ticket number, but at least if I call again, I will have a reference number for as much as they understood of what it was I wanted.

finally connected my A2 via ethernet today and it says the sever is not available after I read all the "terms and Conditions." Can anyone help?

JoeRoscoe
11-14-2008, 12:35 AM
I also have the A2, and have used the ethernet port for the updates exclusively (5 times thus-far) with no problems.

Check your firmware number... The latest is 4.0... update (if yours is not the latest) via the Toshiba website or their version 4.0 update disc. I've heard that "Active ISO Burner 1.1" ( it's free) is the preferred program to use if you download from the Toshiba site.

Exercise caution as some have experienced problems using the update disc...read the instructions carefully and do exactly as discribed.

Just use the latest update... no need to update in sequence.
Good Luck!

Make sure you move the yellow highlight to the OK button on the terms of conditions page. I think there are 2 pages, but cannot remember for sure, so you have to go to the 2nd page to hit OK.

Also make sure there is no disc in the tray when using the Ethernet connection to do the update. This is very important.

Hope this helps!

I upgraded my XA2 alittle while back, but just a cpl of nights ago we were watching Xmas Vacation and it completely shut the player down. I turned on the XA2, and found approximately the same spot. Within a few minutes it shuts down again. I turned it on once more, but this time it plays all the way through. Anyone experience this? Hopefully it never happens again.

It sounds like the shutdown bug. Bruceames can probably tell you if that is the case, he has researched the issue pretty well. I haven't seen it yet with my player but according to polls I have seen over 25% of owners have. I don't think firmware version has any impact on the issue.

Ok thanks. Do you know if the problem is intermittent or with certain titles?

It is definitely intermittent but I don't know whether specific titles contribute to the issue or not. I still haven't seen it but I did just hook up an HD-XA2, I had been using an HD-A30 and HD-A1. I don't know how long I will leave it connected but I will let you know if I see the issue. There is a long thread at AVSForum to read that might help explain what is going on.
