OK it was time to move the 42" Panny Viera upstairs. Bought a new 52" Samsung 120HZ LCD for downstairs. After switching out the TVs the remotes (universal and the original 8300 remote) completely quit controlling the 8300 cable box/DVR. The remotes still control other devices. After a couple hours of investigating (took awhile Monday night football was on) it appears the remotes will work great as long as power to the TV is off. :banghead: The only change I made when switching the TVs was changing from component cables to HDMI.
Anybody had anything strange like this happen? I still need to go in and reset some settings in the box so maybe there is something odd going on with the settings. Maybe the 8300 thinks I'm trying to pull two feeds (component and HDMI) off it????
I will play around with it tonight but if anybody has an idea I would appreciate the time saving advice!

It is a well documented issue that Samsung LCD TV's when on emit a signal that blocks the remote signal. Not too much you can do about that. One alternative would be to replace the LCD with another Panasonic plasma TV.

Wow -- I did not come across this when doing research to buy the TV.
That is odd. The remotes are IR which can affected by strong light but the remotes still operate other devices. So that would mean the TV is just blocking the signal pattern used for the cable box. The Samsung's thin 1.9" allowed us to move up to 52" in the area we have it. Hopefully I can come up with a solution.
Looks like I have a fun challenge coming up.:banghead:

OK, I placed blue masking tape over the iR receiver on the cable box. The remotes now work. Looks ugly as heck so I need to have a more permanent solution but this will work for now. The picture on this TV is so good it would be hard to take it back.
I called Samsung yesterday afternoon and opened a complaint ticket. I just received a call from their service center. They are sending someone out tonight to look at the TV. I definitely did not expect such a quick response!

Awesome. Glad you found such a quick and easy solution. And the Samsung response is commendable as well. :yippee:

I think I started this thread in the wrong forum -at the time I was not aware of the 850's remote interference problem. It probably should be under flat panels. Mods please move if appropriate.
Anyway, what follows is a copy of a post I did on AVS Forums on a report of the service call Samsung did today. http://www./avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1063783&page=23
It may help give a light at the end of the tunnel for 850 owners with the remote interference problems.
Service Report
Samsung is definitely aware of the problem now. They sent out two factory reps - Samsung badges and all. I demonstrated the problem. It was interesting to see their surprise when it took 3 layers of the blue tape across the entire lens of the SA 8300 before the remotes started working. They repeated the testing several times while on the phone with the factory. I showed them this thread and a couple others. I also gave them a print out of slickrock's post (#648).
They took pics of my cable box / setup, took down all model numbers, accessed the factory screen within the TV, adjusted settings etc.....Total time in excess of an hour.
They want to take this TV back to the factory to test further. They will be be back to switch out my set on Friday.
They seemed genuinely surprised and concerned about the problem. Judging by the time they spent on the phone I assume their superiors are too. I guess we will see.
