MLB Playoffs

So who you see winning?

The Rays and the Sox are both going to be in it. At this point, I think the Rays will take the division. It will be really interesting to see how the Rays do in the post season since they are such a young team. Will the pressure make a difference?

As a sox fan, my biggest concern is the Sox facing the Angels.

SOBAY310

I'd like to think that the Dodgers can make a run at this. But we have to hold off the D'Backs (2 GB w/ 6 to go) first. Plus we haven't won a playoff series since I was 8 years old (1988) so I can't get too excited.

I still think the Rays will buckle in the first round. You can never count against the Sox. I checked out Jason Bay's stats and he really is doing a great job over there.

My biased pick is Dodgers vs. Red Sox in the WS.

My realistic pick is Cubs vs. Red Sox.

Yeah, that was definately not a Dempster like performance at home with his 6 or whatever walks in 5 innings. He was lucky all he gave up was the 4 runs. I could not believe Loney swung at the 1st 2 pitches (both were balls) after walking the bases loaded, but boy did he deliver.

My gut feeling is that the Dodger will let him walk. Especially if he's asking for $10 million a year (what he gets paid now). If Lowe does go to Atlanta then I hope he pans out better for you than Andruw Jones did for us.

Sorry Dodgers fans, but I really don't want to see them go the distance. Nothing against the Dodgers, just against Manny. I hate having him get the chance to be in the playoffs after being such an ass before leaving Boston.

Well, we don't care who we play if we make it that far. Honestly, this season would be a huge success if we can just beat the Cubs and make it out of the first round. Anything after that is gravy.

I love me some Manny, he added flavor to The Sox.

LA fans, Manny is gonna help y'all get to the WS.
He got us there twice, but with some help. Orlando Cabrera, and Dave Roberts got it started in NY in 2004baybee. Let's not forget Big Poppy.

I'm a Red Sox fan, and I'm jealous that you have him now. My friend used to cornrow his hair, so I know the real deal why chit went so wrong in Boston. I'll leave it at that.

Manny is a good guy, don't let anyone tell you any different. Most people spewing chit about him are doing so because of what they hear on talk radio, and Boston media.

Well you might see that happen but we will see. As far as Manny goes he is the kind of guy that as long as everyone is paying attention to him and he has a fire under his ass, as it is with him wanting to win the WS so he can say I told you so to the Sox, he plays up to his ability. But as soon as things don't go so well he will revert back to the Manny us Sox fans know very well. He will not put the effort in and basically walk to first on ground balls and whine and moan when it is not all about him. Manny is like a cancer that doesn't kill you but makes you sick and tired of putting up with.IMO.

Don't worry, I can multitask - so I can still hate on Manny. And to clarify, I don't really hate him, I just think he's a total jackass and doesn't deserve any respect. For what he was paid with the Sox, he should have been a model employee.

He's a great player - yes. A good person? Very questionable. Like I said, for what he got paid he should have been a model employee. He was far from it and not even always a good teammate.

When the other players are happy to see him gone, that says a lot.

You guys have a team about to sweep the Angels, how about focusing on the present time.

As far as Manny goes. It's the same for a lot of superstars. Shaq, TO, Moss, and many others. They start to gripe when things go wrong. Manny wasn't happy in Boston and started dogging it. With the Dodgers he is nothing short of spectacular and for the fans in Los Angeles we are living in the moment.

That was good game. If they can play like that continuously, they'll be ok this season.

The Sox game on the other hand was a big disappointment. Mostly that it went so late and they lost. They really should have lost by 3 runs in the 9th as the Angels just made a mistake that should not happen in the playoffs.

I totally agree. I didn't feel that the Sox deserved to win last night unless they won by 4 runs or more. Most of their runs were on a fluke play. You gotta tip your hat to the Angel's pitching last night. They kept a very leathal offense quiet.

But here's hoping the Red Sox can end this Division Series tonight!

I am rooting for a Philly/Tampa world series. I am sure FOX would love to have a Boston/LA series. That would be big also cause Boston just beat LA in the last major sport finals, the NBA, so I think they would get HUGE ratings.

I just don't think the Dodgers pitching will be able to hold down Philly so that is why I pick Philly in 5.

The only things Boston has on Tampa are a better closer & playoff expierience & both could play a huge part just like when Boston played Colorado last year. But I like the Tampa starters better than the Red Sox just cause I don't think Lester can kep up the great pitching, as I think he pitched a bit over his head, hard not to root for a guy like Lester though. I also still think Beckett is not a 100%, but if Beckett is 100% he wil be unstoppable. I am gonna go Tampa in 7....with a game 7 game winning HR in the 9th by Akinori Iwamura off Paps in the 9th;)

I am not a fan or hater of any of these teams though, it is just my opinion. I am a huge Josh Beckett fan though so I hope he does well.

Well said......I believe Philly will sweep the dodgers, they'll get on a momentum role at home and sweep the dodgers in LA. The Rays may win one game at home. However living on the west coast, it woul dbe nice to see a East/West World Series that way the time slots on the broadcast would be even.....although a night game on the west coast would suck for the east coast or vice a versa.

Yeah, the way the Rays are playing I wouldn't be surprised if they end this series on Thursday. They just seem very unstoppable. I was hoping the Sox would put up a better fight but sometimes it just isn't in the cards. Maybe it will go more than 5 games. Here's hoping. :)

I think the sox will take the next game Diasuke so far is the only winner of a game in this series.

It's the next 2 games in Tampa that I'd question. Will Beckett be 100% and have a good game? I think Lester would given the opportunity again, I"m just not sure Beckett's 100%.

I have followed Beckett very closely since he was very young as I used to run a sports card buisness & collected some great cards of him wich I unloaded when he beat the Yankees to win it for the Marlins as the price went thru the roof.

Anyways, I have watched him pitch alot since I always get the baseball package & I would bet money he is hurt as he is an awesome pitcher who is battle tested in tuff playoff situations & has dominated his opponents & the way he has looked since he came back from injury & in the playoffs is not the real Josh Beckett. I am rooting for the Rays just cause they are such a great story this year & I believe they will finish this off before a game seven happens.
If Dice K could throw a great game & win tonight then it just may inspire Beckett to overcome his pain & throw a great game in game 6. I know if I had to pick a guy to win a must win game for me I wouldn't think twice of taking Beckett, if healthy.

Good Luck to all Rays & Sox fans tonight & Congrats to all the philly fans. Will be a great series no matter who plays Philly. I picked Philly & Tampa but for TV ratings I am sure FOX would love to see Boston.

Jed Lowrie? JED LOWRIE??? JED LOWRIE:confused::confused::confused:

Now I was watching the game play out on CBS Sports' Gamecenter so I didn't get to hear the TV guys talk, but am I missing something here??? The Sox had Ellsbury & Casey on the bench available to pinch hit I believe & the Sox bring in Jed Lowrie??? A guy who had a .214 avg for the season.
So could somebody fill me in on what the commentators may have said to explain this move wich looked like a idiotic move as soon as I seen he was batting for Cora. Heck, I'd rather have had Cora bat than Jed Lowrie:thatsit

But I was rooting for the Rays & am glad to see they won even though the one place that Boston had a decidedly better edge on them, the bullpen, almost cost them everything. But they made it & it should be a great World Series.
I am gonna root for the Rays & I think it will go 7 games also. If I was TB's manager I would not put one of my big starting pitchers up against Hamels in Game 1, as Hamels is a great pitcher plus he just happens to be on fire right now & I can't see him losing a game.
Once again I think the only big edge either team has is the Philly bullpen over TB's....UNLESS....David Price could handle the job & I think even though he is practically a kid he has the stuff to handle the closer job as striking out JD Drew with 2 outs & bases loaded proved it. TB just can't count on Wheeler to finish.
And hats off to Matt Garza who was awesome tonight with 9 k's & only 2 hit & 1 run.

Anyways good luck to all the fans here of TB & Philly as I am only goin with TB cause they the great story this year.

Well, kudos to the Rays. It was a good series.

I really wonder what the outcome would have been had Mike Lowell been healthy and able to play. That's baseball though - injuries are part of the game..

This Rays team will be interesting to see over the next few years though.

Believe me, you would not have received any good analysis out of the announcers. They were HORRIBLE!!! I have been so disappointed with TBS showing these post season games. At least they had high def this year, but that's the only positive I have for them.

I have to disagree about preferring to have Cora in over Lowrie. The way Cora just watched 3 stikes go in was disappointing. Was like he didn't care.

What I hope people get from this is you don't need to be a team with a huge budget to do well. You just need a group of guys who play really well together.

But you are probably right. When these players become free agents they will be offered more money elsewhere and move on.

There are lots of teams that have guys that play well together. What you need is a long string of number 1 (overall) draft picks and have some guys get hot at the right time. At least that formula is working well for the Rays.
Unfortunatly, most of the time the teams with the higher payrolls get more chances and win more World Series, thats a fact. There are the occasional exceptions which give all teams hope. Hopefully there will be more balance down the road but I am happy for the Rays and wish them luck.

Kind of reminds me of the Atlanta Braves, only Atlanta's not really a small market, it's just cheap ass owners. Even during the 14 year stretch of making the playoffs they never had any high priced talent, they just peaced together good ball players and great pitching. But I think that's why they only won 1 World Series. They always lacked that one superstar to come through when they needed it.

I agree.. While they did make some very good trades, a lot of their talent came from high draft picks. And those picks were a direct result of them being awful for so long.

Unless they spend the money when the time comes, they are likely going to have cycles of being really good and then really bad and then repeat.

I don't think anyone expected that they go right from the really bad to really good though.

I must say, part way through the 4th inning, I hooked the tv up to my Dolby Digital receiver, and it was pure awesomeness. The announcers sounded like they were in the room with me, and the sound of all the rain was recreated perfectly in the surround speakers. I kept looking around, thinking there was a leak in the room.

not true.....Bud Selig said in his press conference that if the Rays hadn't scored, they would've went in to a rain delay until today or Wednesday. Basically, there was NO WAY this game is not being played the full 9 or longer innings.

Ray Charles could do a better job that the umpires they have assembled. They could assemble a bad call highlight reel from this series alone, on both sides. Longoria shoves his glove in a players ass and the umpire is unable to see it from 3 feet away. Balldelli clearly strikes out and is called out and then HP umpire appeals to 1st base umpire and Balldelli walks. Get real. And the strike zone.....

The question is should the game had started in the first place. I did not watch the game but I think I heard that the weather forecast predicted 90% chance of rain before the game started.

Starting the game was crazy. It was already raining and the radar showed it was only going to get worst. 40 degrees, raining, with a 17mph wind, that could be the worst conditions ever for a MLB game.

How stupid is it that Vegas paid out already based on regular season rules. They basically went back to the last full inning played and that was when Philly led 2-1.

I think they are in for some big trouble if Tampa was to make a comback, as those betting on the final winner of the world series should technically get paid today. If Phillies won the other night, they won the world series technically speaking..

The whole thing is so stupid though - there should clearly be something in the rules about playoffs and delays - a playoff should REQUIRE 9 innings of play. This should be known at the start of the playoffs.

Furthermore, they really need to cut down on spring training or start it earlier so they can end the regular season a week or two earlier and not have the playoffs run this late.

Congrats to all you Philly fans as they played well & deserved it & being so young with a little more help in the rotation could be a contender for awhile.

Hopefully for Tampa fans the owner will break out his wallet & keep these great young players he has as they could rule the east for awhile cause Boston & NY are gonna have to ante up a bunch of money for pitchers to stay competitive I think. But they have the cash to do it.

That's exactly the problem they now face. They have a terrible fanbase, before they started winning anyway, but even when they were they hardly ever sold out. Next season will be interesting to see if all the bandwagon fans stick around... if they struggle early and set the tone that this year was a fluke, I bet the majority won't.

And Tampa's ownership is cheap, dirt cheap. But perhaps it's a good thing that they lost the WS because these guys would want to get paid royally if they won it all this year. We see it time and time again in sports, if you're getting paid shit and you finally win a championship, there is nothing else left to accomplish but to get that large check.

I don't know what contracts these Tampa players are in, but it will be interesting to see if Tampa fronts the cash to keep them.

Anyway, congrats to the Phillies. Even though this WS was the lowest rated in history and I didn't bother watching a single game, I did not want the boring, lame Rays taking it. The city of Philly and its people definitely by a long shot deserved it more. :yippee

Those were the exact points I was going to touch on. I wonder how many Rays ''fans'' will come back to support the team at the start of next season. The team was absolutely dominating throughout the entire season and those people in Tampa didn't even give a shit to come out and support the team until they were in the playoffs. What a disgrace. It would of made me sick to my stomach to see those fans in Tampa already getting a WS title over the fans in Philly who have been loyal for years. On a sidenote, with this Phillies WS win, it has put has put a kibosh on the media lovefest for the Rays.

Yeah, tell me about it. I loved how the cameras zoomed in onto the faces of Rays fans with the look of being absolutely dismayed watching "their team" choking. WTF? Many of them could give a shit about the Rays like they showed every year until they made it to the playoffs then suddenly being a Rays fan was acceptable and cool... piss off you posers. Tickets to Rays games are almost free yet most of them couldn't even spring the loose change.

As for the lovefest with the Rays... everyone loves a Cinderella story, including the media. Always have and always will.

Ya know what it's the same for the Marlins as well. When they won it in 2003 the stands were packed. At that time I was in Iraq and could not go to the game man I was upset. So all the people who were so called "Marlins" fans in my unit would not even go to a game the next season EVEN THOUGH THEY COULD GET A FREE SEAT for being in the military. I said to them because I'm from NY I said at least us northern fans stick by our team weather we win or lose you people are just pathetic and I cant stand people like you. On a side note my husband and I went to the last game as defending world series champions at Dolphin stadium in 04 against the Phillies since my husband is from PA and I said the same thing to the Marlins fans. You are world series champions and you cant even half way sell out how pathetic is that?!! They have always been like that for either team in FL it's pathetic. It's because one thing most people are not from FL originally. That's what we think anyways. They were saying on ESPN that the rays were the 12th worst in attendance in the AL that's out of 14 I honestly think these people will not be back since that's what always happens. They are lucky to get 20k per game.

You got that right. When I would watch the sox play in Tampa it always surprised me there were so many sox fans in Tampa, year, after year, after year.

I never ever heard their fans chant chit. I always thought that was odd. The Red Sox fans know what suffering means, we have lived it and breathed it.
The Phillie fans know the same thing, they are with their team when they don't win.

I remember watching the last game in Tampa, and the Phillies won. Well Fox put the camera on this hefty lady who had a phuckin tear in her eye. I thought to myself biatch you don't even know what suffering means. I didn't feel sorry for her in the least, I know dam well her big ass was not there during the season so boo mf hoo.
