Need Hook-Up Help

I recently purchased a Panasonic 46 in Plasma TV. I have an older model Onkyo Receiver. I will be hooking up my Dish network HDTV box when they bring it.

My question is: What is the best way to hook this stuff up for optimal results?

My Onkyo Receiver does not have HDMI cables. It has Digital Audio, S Video, and RCA hook-ups. How should I hook this stuff up?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I am new to all this HD stuff and would like to keep my receiver if possible.

Thanks in advance,

Wes

Connect the STB to the TV with a HDMI cable
Connect the STB to the Receiver with a Digital Audio cable (coax or optical)
Turn the TV speakers OFF
if you also have a DVD or HDM player, connect it the same way.

Thank you so much!
You are saying I need to hook up my DVD player through my receiver correct?

Forgive me for being so stupid about this stuff. I used to be up-to-date on this stuff like 10 years ago. Seems like there's something new coming out every other year now. Glad to have you guys on this forum.

Thnaks again!

Wes

That is correct but in many cases, users have had better and less problematic results connecting the Dish box to the TV with component cables. Every other connection being the same as listed.

So you are saying to hook it up with HDMI and component? The best audio source my Receiver has is Optical. Next in line is the yellow, red, white RCAs.

Looks like I will have to make a trip to the store for more cables.

Component for video and optical for audio. For the Dish Network receiver, not HDMI at all.

I think I'm getting confused now. Most people say that HDMI is the way to go. So are u saying I shouldn't even hook up with HDMI at all?

How would you guys hook this stuff up? I'm open to any suggestions at all. If you could just tell me what to hook up where cable by cable I am open to anything.

Thank you guys so much. I am about to throw this stuff out the window.

The above info is 100% correct.

Connect any VIDEO connections straight into the tv.

Connect any AUDIO connections straight into the receiver.

Many of us prefer component cables (red/green/blue) for the video as there are fewer handshake problems than with HDMI, and the picture quality is equal. You don't use both HDMI and component, use only one, it's your choice.

I like optical cable straight from any of my connected items into my receiver, you can use digital coax as well.

That's what they said above, just trying to clarify for you.

If you must have HDMI, try it, but as stated above, just use it for video into your tv and turn off the tv speakers.
