Well I received the Hauppague HD DVR today and hooked it up for an initial run through. The good news is it does record HQ HD through the component inputs. There is a set of outputs that allow feed through so all you have to do is to reconnect the component and audio (analog or optical) cables that was feeding your TV to the inputs and connect the component and audio outputs back to your TV. They furnish a 5 connector cable just for this. Next you install the drivers and software and you are ready to record! Very easy.
First run through there are a couple of things that I wish were different. There is no way to watch what is being recorded in full screen. You have to play the file after recording for that. Of course you can watch the receiver input rather than the PC as well.
Then the files the unit makes are not compatible with any editing software I have, or at least what I've tried so far. Also so far only the player that comes with it will play the files. That's a bit disappointing. The software comes with a converter, but it seems like an overnight thing so far and I don't know what improvement it will yield.
But it will serve the purpose of unloading my DVR which is good enough for me, so as I get more into it things can only improve.
