hi i have a sony bravia 42 lcd with direct tv and im using an hdmi cable from receiver to tv is that the best picture set up or should i use different cable or need any other equipment to get good hd picture thanks

In order to get "the best picture possible" you should use either HDMI or Component cables. Either will provide "the best" signal.
Since you are already using HDMI, then you are indeed getting the best signal to your set that you possibly can.

As for getting the best possible picture, the next step would be to pick up one of the popular calibration DVDs (Avia or DVE) and calibrate the display.
