1080i issues with older HD tv

I have a Mitsubishi WT-46809 HD ready tv purchased in 2002. It is 1080i capable and had no issues using the 1080i input with Dish network and the HD package. With U-Verse if i set the aspect ratio to 1080i, on any channel i watch, hd or standard, the picture will scramble then go black. This happens at least a few times an hour. I am using composite inputs. Tv does not have HDMI and is not 720 compatable. I have called U-verse and they say that my tv is unable to keep up with there signal. Has anyone ever heard of this problem? HD worked fine with Dish with a better picture hooked up the same way.

Do you mean component inputs? Composite is the yellow single cable and component is the red-blue-green triple cable.

Some of the older HDTVs had two component inputs and one (usually component2) would only go to 480p. Are you hooked up to component1?

Yes i am using component inputs (red green blue). I have it connected to the DTV input which says it is 1080i capable.

I don't know what to tell you next. Maybe go back to Dish.

Wow i just posted a new thread before I read this and I am having the same exact problem, but no one can seem to answer why this is happening. I live in an apartment and I cannot get a dish without paying an extra fee to the landlords and Comcast is so amazingly expensive! Help!

You might try another set of component cables. Other than that, I don't know what to suggest.

when first setting up we went to 1080i and no picture, went to 720p and works fine. 2002 Sony XBR HD 1080i and 720p compatible.

I'm researching a similar problem w/my mom's U-Verse...

She has a Samsung 4:3 CRT that's 1080i capable. U-Verse box connected via Component RGB, the SD picture is pretty darned good.

When we change the setup in the U-Verse box to 1080i for HD channels, it passes the 1080i "test", but there's no noticeable improvement on HD programming on HD channels vs. their SD counterparts, and the SD channels now have to be "zoomed" or set to "stretch" to fill the screen but the picture is somehow softer and looses some detail and content around the edges.

Anyone have a similar setup that works or more info?

Thanks in advance.
