I don't know why I'm playing Killzone, maybe because I never finished it...maybe because of the recent trailers for Killzone 2...maybe because I just love torture.
This game is AWFUL!!! How was this ever hyped as a Halo Killer?
The controls are sluggish, the sensitivity doesn't help much (and note I openly state I suck at console FPS, but I consider myself decent at Halo/CoD4,) the graphics are really...really...really old gen, the overall feel of the game is...just...I dunno.
Anyone remember this game? What were your experiences?

Killzone was the first game I ever beat. I wasn't too in to FPS's back then, nor video games for that matter. I played the whole game and liked it. I enjoyed the concept and storyline. I thought the Helghast were a cool enemy. The game will always be pretty special to me. It's totally subjective and I expect to see several "It sucks" posts by people who never played anything more than the demo. As you can probably imagine , I'm REALLY looking forward to KZ2.
Side note- I'm not the best at FPS's, but I've gotten better over the years and KZ was the start of me getting "better". I can kill some ass on CoD4 (most of the time).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to bash Killzone the series, as I am too rather interested in Killzone 2.
But I've played varied FPS on the consoles, and popping this in recently has showed me how poor the product is, when compared to other FPS (like Halo.)
The intro was interesting, the tutorial levels were decent, but so far the controlls are really sluggish and the snipping...WTF is up with that? You don't aim via a crosshair like most FPS, you aim by a giant circle, moving the right analog stick moves the giant circle, and if you move too much to a side you move your POV in that direction, rather than it being direct. It is cumbersome.

Killzone had a cool first couple levels, the controls were stiff as a board, and I remember being ultimately let down in the end.

I just played the demo. I was part of PS2 Underground group that got alot of demos from sony. Great atmosphere and sound, bland controls and gameplay. I recall it had a nice animation when reloading the gun :p It was hyped so much as the halo killer. wow was it such a disappointment.

I agree with you 100%. I had my brother purchase 2 copies of Killzone. I played his, and told him to return my copy! Terrible game.
Which is why I will remain a skeptic of KZ2 until they prove me wrong.

Hmm.. I never played the killzone1. That bad eh?
I just tried out resistance for the first time a few weeks ago, found it at the local pawn shop for $20. So far I haven't gotten into it, cod4 keeps calling me back!

i never played it, i wasnt into fps's at that time.. the game that got me into fps's that was killer was Black by criterion(makers of burnout) .. that ps2 game was unbelieveable in terms of graphics and fun factor, yes it didnt have online but oh well, the destructive environments where sick!. and did i mention the graphics!?, for a PS2 game some people where saying it was close to a PS3 game when played at 480p.
i heard killzone was not good, but then again it sold a ton of copies, so obviously alot of people liked it so they brought it.
im totally looking forward to KZ2 and im sure they will release a demo of it close to its release date..

I was in the PSN underground demo also. I enjoyed it. It had a LOT of graphical glitches, but I thought they would fix those prior to releasing it. Nope. So I didn't buy it. But it was fun.

I wouldn't call it a bad game by any means. Just way over hyped.

So I'm grudgingly (sp?) put more hours in Killzone.
My original complaints about the graphics I'll retrack. I'm not saying the game has OMG graphics, but I think my girlfriend put it in good perspective - "it's a PS2 game, what did you expect? Have you gotten spoiled by the new hardware? I thought you were all about the gaming!" Haha.
The graphics are...so-so. I'd have to load up an old school game to compare, looking at some Half Life: Source screenshots isn't a good comparative, but then looking at some UT1 screenshots...I dunno if that is a good comparative. I skipped Black after I read it was awful (one of the first games I remember launching at $50, and within a month it was already $20 bucks new, I figured it was bad) so I can't think of any FPS to compare it aside Halo. And comparing it to Halo 1/2 the game's graphics are awful. Granted I hated Halo 2's texture loading issues, but when they did load the game looked great.
Controls still suck balls. I don't know if its my PS2 controller (you guys who game a lot, ever have that special controller that is always yours, no one else can use it and through wear and tear it is perfect for your gaming styles - yeah well I lost mine during the move, bought a new one and never really broke it in) or the game itself. It just feels very sluggish. So I adjusted the sensitivity, and if I push the thumbstick too hard the crosshair still jumps like 20-30 pixels. sensitivity seems to only affect small moves in the stick, ie 1-2mm movements, but moving the stick to a max point it seems to respond the exact same way. Which is annoying! I know I'm not this bad at console FPS.
Fun Factor - so far the controls are really hindering any fun factor. I've died too many times by stupid stuff. Since the Helghast have moderatelly good AI (as they duck and move and what not to avoid getting killed) moving my crosshair to keep up with them is really tiresome. I'm going to load it up on the PS3 today and see if the controller itself is an issue (I got my DS3 broking in perfectly for me!)
Also, my graphics complaint could be the 32" TV in the bedroom. I wanted to put our old 52" in here, but it was way too big. I sort of regret that now that I'm playing a few games before bed.
